I just bought a Valley 16K hitch to put in my 99 F250 longbed (8 ft bed). Currently I have 2 side toolboxes which are about 6 ft long. They extend above the rails prob. 6-7" or so. I'm thinking I will have to remove them but since I haven't picked up the camper yet (it is at an auction) I don't know if I can leave them on. The hitch can be adjusted height wise up another notch or two. Does anybody here tow a 5th with 2 side toolboxes intact? Would be nice to have my tools over the road. Camper is an 05 Forest River Salem/

You'll almost certainly have to take out the tool boxes. Bed clearance on most FWs is a minimum of 6", though more is better if you can keep your FW level. See if you can swap for a cross-bed, flush box. Some neat ones that sit right at the rear of the bed and have a V in them to clear the king pin.

I have 2 saddle toolboxes in my truck, they are about a 1/2" below the bed caps and my pinbox would hit them if it sung that far.

I don't think you'll be able to even hitch up with the boxes in there.

Problem is, fifth wheel builders and PU truck builders (even those with tow package option) don't get together so the damn things will match up.

I agree with those above. It is important that your fiver is as level, fore and aft, as possible when it is hooked up, and that you have at least 6 inches of clearance between the bed rail and the underside of the fiver. With your side tool boxes it will next to impossible to gain this 6 inches of clearance.

Agree with all above, the boxes will have to go.

On the Ram I have I was able to get a box that went across the bed behind the window and I also found that a short bed Tonneau cover was the perfect length for the rest of the long bed. Now I can keep things out of sight and the weather when not hooked to the trailer which I believe is a great benefit. Take some measurements as it might work on your truck also.

A front over the rail box may work, but nothing above the rails will work on the back. As soon as you turn on a goofy road or driveway with a big elevation change, you truck rails may be real close. Ours even hit slightly just the other day when turning a sharp corner with a hill on one side of the intersection.

I have 2 yukon (porkchop) boxes mounted on our shortbox superduty. they come back about 40 inches and stick above the bed 2 inches. any longer or taller would cause me grief.
