I have a 2010 Montana Mountaineer. I just stumbled on a discussion about Dexter axles that says trailers, including RV trailers, under 15K pounds are typically equipped with self-adjusting brakes. It appears that this started in about 2008.
Does anyone know, or think they know, if my trailer is or probably is equipped with self-adjusting brakes? The rated gross weight is something like 12.5K pounds, I believe.

Don't think they are 'standard' equipment........probably 'upgraded option'
Check your data sheet that lists components/serial numbers for the Dexter Axle info. then call Dexter and inquire.
You can pull the hubs and see if they have the adjusting cable/ratchet lever needed to actuate the star wheel.
Might be able to look thru back adjustment slot......remove plug, shine flashlight thru slot and look for a lever sitting on top of star wheel.
No cable/ratchet lever than no self adjust.......

My 2010 Outback does not have self adjusting brakes. I just greased a hub, so I looked at that stuff. I think my GVWR is 7700# or so.

Self adjusting brakes on a trailer would be an exception in my experience

They have been pretty much useless on cars and trucks all these years. I wouldn't expect them to work on a trailer either. It's a lot easier to adjust brakes without that POS lever in the way.

My 08 Hitchhiker and my current 13 Bighorn both came with self adjusting brakes. I had the Hitchhiker for 4 years and never had to manually adjust the brakes.

I heard that on the Montana Forum as well, at least for the Montana around 2008. I don't know about the Mountaineer. My 2007 are manually adjusted.

Dexter makes the brake assemblies for 6klb and 7klb pound axles. It seems the RV manufacturer always has advertised this feature, if so equipped, by placing a sticker on the fender of the RV or made mention of it in the sales flyers. I doubt you have them but you might call Keystone and ask. They should know. Phillip

Self adjusting brakes were standard on my custom Teton. (Dexter 10K axles with Dexter Air Flex suspension) I have never had to adjust the brakes on my 2004 Teton. The brakes adjust when you apply the brakes while backing up. Self adjusting brakes could have been an option on your trailer.
