Here I am on Friday 13 April, storing away my fans and bringing out my electric heaters! Looking at a part of the Pacific Ocean , realizing that the shorts and sleevless teeshirts will stay stowed under the bed until I hit around Mazatlan next Oct-- God willing!
I know a lot of snowbirds go back to a shoulder season and hit good temps in Jul Aug. But few realize that the Victoria area has no outdoor pools! and you do not need to ask why!!
Anyway, I am here locked into BC med problems which by the way are being solved with no complaints. I have locked myself into summers on Vancouver Island when I should be going to the interior!!
If and or when I survive my Radical Prostectomy next Friday I am going to have to look at a FM3 with Mex med insurance later.
I cannot afford, financially and mentally to continue living in the country where I was born and defended under arms for 37 yrs when I have the option of wonderful MEXICO!!

First of all, good luck with your procedure, and then come on down. I too went the FM3 route, and can leave both the RV and van in Mexico year round. I'll be signing up for the IMSS insurance next month, so I'll be covered wherever I am in Mexico. I came to the conclusion that there was no need for me to go NOB, and that I'd just head somewhere over 5,000 feet elevation to escape the heat from July to November, so with the money I saved, I'll do this:
Lew, best of luck in your surgery and recovery. Then, do as Bill says... FM3 and some kind of medical insurance in Mexico. I might even look into IMSS next winter, since so many expats have tried it and had good care. Even without, though, I've been able to pay for my own medical care, including one minor and one MAJOR surgery, without having insurance, it's that much less costly. If you get desperate for somewhere warm to spend a few weeks this summer, come south again!
Lew, Good luck with the surgery, I am sitting here with counts fluctuating between 9.8 and 14.0. I have two different oncologist and they each have different agendas. I'm getting an outside opinion from either City of Hope or Loma Linda Cancer Center.
I'd love to be in your shoes with a choice of locations. DGKs and DDs all live here in the Los Angeles basin area and the DW is afraid to travel to any part of Mexico right now. Oh well, it's off to the Grand Canyon in May for a couple of days and then either radiation or the Radical Protectomy in June. Surgery, a months at home recuperating or radiation seven days a week for 8 weeks.

Lew: Good luck with your surgery. Before anyone jumps from being a temporary RV'r to full time living in Mexico there are lots of things to consider. Many have done this and are very happy. There are also many who tried or investigated and changed their mind. It is especially hard for Canadians as we lose our medical care ( even though at time it is useless). One also has to look at how you will be taxed. Living in an RV parek and living in a house are totally different. My advice would be to rent a house or RV spot for 6 months or even a year before making any moves. IMSS is not for everyone. In some cities it is OK. In others it is scary! Private health insurance for anyone over 65 is either hard to get or very expensive. Most insurers will not cover you much beyond 67. Lots to think about. But better to think about the great move than your health issues!
I think all the ideas are good and I have been on an FM2 for 20 years. Love it. Came here and never left.
But I agree with Moisheh, investigate thoroughly. I currently have private insurance. 35,000 peso deductible. Never have had a claim thank goodness. My cardiologist charges me 1500 pesos for the works every year and I can afford that. But, my insurance keeps going up. I pay 12,000 pesos a year with the high deductible. I too am thinking about IMSS but am checking long and hard. I am also looking into Seguro Popular as they are now covering some transplants. As Moisheh says, location is important. Still can't make up my mind. I may even do a mix of semi-private and IMSS as they use the same doctors.
FM3 allows for fidecomiso of land and house, FM2 "inmigrado" allows for full ownership but not along coastlines and borders. All that could change and we are waiting for the new rules.
Just throwing things out there. Property tax is dirt cheap.
fugawibill, excellent photos! Really shows some good places.

I would be interested in your experience concerning signing up for IMSS. I would post such a question here - but I know it's not purely about RVing - however, for those of us who spend 6 months or more in Mexico RVing, it is helpful to know about this insurance, the procedure/limitations for getting it, etc.
If this forum in inappropriate for this discussion - then maybe those of you who have some information about IMSS could please PM me. My husband and I are considering the same thing but are unsure of the process, coverage, exclusions, etc.

This forum is an appropriate place for the discussion. However, you may be better served by starting a new thread.
There have been rumours that soon IMSS will no longer cover foreigners. There are exclusions for pre existing conditions that are often age related. If this is your first encounter with socialized medicine you will be shocked! I would think you need at least the new "FM3".

Hey Lew, send us a PM. Maybe we can get together with a few other displaced part time Mexicans and have a few Coronas!
