I fill my black tanks (I have two) completely full with soap and softener mixed with water and let sit for at least 24 hours.

Then drain.

I don't use bleach as I've seen some bad reactions with bleach and certain cleaners plus sterilizing the black tank isn't what I wanted to do.

I buy my softener and detergent at the 99 cent store.

Bleach isn't a very good cleaner at all. It's an excellent disinfectant, though.

A Tiffin Tech recommended Pine Power. We use that along with Calgon liquid water softner. The Calgon has a "slicky" feel to it, which not to be "indelicant" kind of "slicks up" the commodes and tanks. We clean the commode with one third Dawn, one Third Calgon, and one third Pine Power. We mix this together in an empty squirt bottle. Sometimes we will squirt some down each drain.

When we get home we fill the grey and black water tanks with water, and soak over night with Calgon and Pine Power, then dump both tanks. We have never had an odor problem.

vinegar and baking soda leave it till the next dump. This really cleans the sensors and any thing else, then put your fabric softner in.

After dumping the black tank I would always smell an odor when refilling the tank partially with water. I just dumped the detergent/bleach/water mixture after sitting about 6 hours and it did the trick, no odor what so ever. You can debate this all you want but the bleach worked for me. Thanks for the replies. Bob.

This system (GEO) has worked well for us, and hundreds of others, for years;

We have never cleaned the black tank with chemicals in 10 yrs and 65,000 miles and use no chemical additives except when requested by the RV park (one only). We do have a tank water flush system that I use periodically.

I am not sure what is accomplished with bleach, unless you are converting that tank to some other use?

Instead of bleach try Dawn or some other general purpose cleaner as previous posters suggested. Detergents and water softeners will help release the waste from the sides and bottoms of the tank better than bleach.

The laundry deteregent and bleach should indeed help clean the tank but you really don't need the bleach. Bleach is generally used to sanitize the fresh water system.

If you use bleach in your black tank you will need to rinse it very well if you usually use a black tank treatment as there is a possiblity that the combo of bleach residue and black tank additive may not be a good mix.

This works for me. When we get home from a trip and not going anywhere for a month or two I fill tanks full of water, put i/3 bottle of ridx in each tank(i have 3)let sit for 3 or4 weeks and dump. Runs out like melted ice cream .A couple renses, spotless. Wont work for everyone,but works for me.I dump in my septic system. I use no chimicles lots of water when on road works well also.
