The wife is growling about the battery in her IPOD Touch not holding a charge as it used to. You know same ole symptoms of battery going south.

Can I take it out to my barn and get it apart with the crescent wrench and ball peen hammer?

Seriously, can those things be taken apart by the owner and a new batt put in? Darn it, it doesn't have any phillips screws holding it together.

tnx

This is not an easy task. I have replaced the battery in the original IPOD, and have to do the same in my ITOUCH. At this point I probably will take it to a shop that specializes in doing this type of work. I will not take it to Apple,as they just exchange it with another one, so you have to restore yours to factory settings to eliminate all of your personal data.

When you take out the battery does it not lose everything?

As TonyinPA said, check out the videos. It can be done. The websites that you can purchase the batteries on will supply a special "tool" with the battery that will pry open the case without damage. I have not done this on an Ipod Touch but I have changed the battery on another unit that was supposed to be factory only battery replacement.

If you are at all uncertain about getting into the delicate circuits inside the Ipod then either find a shop that will replace the battery for you or take it to an Apple store and let them switch it for a refurb. (You are not getting a new Ipod when they exchange it.)

The iPhone battery replacement requires you to unsolder/resolder the new battery in. I assume the iPod is the same.

If you can do that it shouldn't be too difficult.

Also, check YouTube. There are tons of instructional vids for everything you could think of.

I've been into my iPOD 4G and a iPhone 3GS for batteries and buttons. It can be done, but a finesse with working on small electronics really helps. You can find all the parts, case tools, etc. on eBay, but look at the videos 1st and decide if you really wanna get in there or have it done.
