If you've never soldered delicate electronic parts before check out Youtube Videos first and then practice. I tiny too much heat applied and your device becomes a paper weight. Just a thought.

Take it to Batteries Plus. They have the tools to open it and the replacement battery. You will be in and out in 15 minutes and the cost will be about what you will be able to do it yourself for.

One thing to look at. If the wifi is turned on and there isn't any wifi available, the battery will run down in a few hours. Make sure the wifi is turned off

Obviously it isn't a problem for you but the reality is: wifi ON does indeed use more battery than wifi OFF. But its nice to have the choice.

The contents of the ipod are stored on flash disk, so the battery being gone will not affect them. Unless one is GOOD with a soldering iron, there is a high chance of destroying the iPod, so I'd take it to a pro who has the equipment and skill to deal with batteries.

If you want a go at it yourself, I've used www.ifixit.com to good use a few times on other Apple gadgets.

The reality is that if your device runs down in a couple hours, you have other issues that are above having wifi turned on.

I repair a couple a month, the videos lie, and the tools they send you are a joke, and can't release the clips at all. If you destroy it, send it to me, I have all the parts in stock for the 2-4 gens..I can even repair any damage you do to the circuit board when you rip the connectors off the board if your not careful, but it's better if you don't get that far. If you don't get that battery lying just right, when you snap it closed, you'll ruin the LCD from the back side, and you'll have all kinds of colors on the screen.I'm Level 3 trained now, and I can say phones are much easier to disassemble then the Touches, I don't like those snap together deals.
