Dodge came in a far 3rd.
I'm a Dodge owner, and well, that disappointed me.
Motortrend badmouthed the Cummins engine, saying it had to work harder towing their 12,000 pound trailer than the GM or Ford diesel.
It has 800 ft/lbs of torque. Why is this happening?
Also the mileage comparisons were quite distinct. The 1 ton ram was about 2-3 mpg lower than the Ford and GM diesels in their testing analysis.
Should we expect some major changes with the 2013 Cummins line for the Ram? Do you expect a major H.P. increase and also Urea injection like the other brands use?
Is Dodge/cummins being real conservative on their engine programming compared to Ford and GM.
Motortrend subtely criticized the inline 6 configuration over the V8 layout of the Ford and GM.
I think the inline Cummins 6 is a solid engine and basework to power the ram. I sure hope they don't jump to a Mercedes or Fiat diesel and dump the venerable Cummins. The Cummins is a much less complex engine compared to the Ford and GM offering.
I still think the Dodge Cummins is not being pushed to the limits that the Ford and GM diesels are being programmed just to win the power race.
Have any of you read the article yet in Motor Trend?
Please don't do anything to get this thread closed when replying. Thankyou....The OP

I believe in the hurt locker testing they attributed the loss of power to the transmission. And of course nobody tested for reliably as of yet. Seems I have read a few HPFP issues going on . And yes I'm pretty sure the Cummins will have DEF to help with the MPG. IMO you forgot the braking subject, maybe another topic.
Just to add have you ever noticed that long flat torque line on a stock Cummins? Your right they have mild tunes for whatever reason, warranty?

Why do you put any stock in what Motor Trend says? After all, They pickes the Ridgeline as the best truck a few years ago. they have no credibility

I saw nothing on their website concerning this. Do you have a link? I wouldn't put too much into anything any commercial enterprise says about such testing considering they except advertising from the makers and most likely whoever is advertising the most currently, will be the winner for that test! Also does it really matter if the truck you have is meeting your needs? I am a true fan of Ford trucks and never been a diesel owner (and never will) so sitting through the years of Ford diesel bashing is sometimes disheartening but ultimately it makes no difference to me. I have been extremely pleased with the three Super Duty gas offerings I have owned and the current one makes me smile ear to ear every time I drive it. Motor Trend, Car & Driver, CR, and all the other "testing" outfits can kiss my behind with their tests. My experience is worth more than anything they can dream up.

IMHO Dodge ruined the flat as a table top torque curve engine by trying to play keep-up.
Look at the perfect torque curve of the old engine and then look at the new sucky H.O. one.
One thing to look forward to is when Cummins goes urea. I think you will see a BIG change in the torque curve (think flat again) when they do. It's really hard to keep the Cummins clean without urea. At least as clean as the tree huggers want. That will all change when they start using urea (in pickups).
Same way with the mileage. It will all change for the better when Cummins goes to urea.

Way to much emphasis is put on the various magazine and other media truck tests. They all end up touting a few feet of distance or a few seconds of time over a defined towing distance. In the end, it matters very little to anyone out on the road towing their RV. Not many of us race each other up mountains.
Get the truck YOU like and it will serve you well. And forget about the "winner" of the lastest truck test. It will probably be different when done by the next tester anyway. Just a way to sell magazines.
