I rode through the park once in winter and they were decorating for Christmas. It looks like a nice place to camp. The next time I'm in Charleston, I will stay there.

The only problem we have ever had with James Island is the signs that direct you there (off 17) is they will direct you down streets that have overhanging limbs that are very close to the top of the MH. We actually hit a small one and broke it. Thank goodness there was not real damage to the coach. We did some scouting before leaving to find a route with less overhang and wider streets so we could dodge the lower ones.

We are heading down there in a few weeks. By what route should we take from I-26? Also are there fire rings on the campsites?

Take I-26 into Charleston. It becomes Highway 17 south. Stay in the right hand lanes and continue following the signs to James Island. At the end of the expressway turn left onto Folly Road. Stay on Folly road for a few miles then turn right on George L Griffith Blvd in front of Walmart. Follow it to the end and turn rt onto Riverland Drive and then left into the park.
This is the easiest way I have found. Some turn on to Camp Road off of Folly which is about a mile or so before you get to George L Griffith. It is a harder rt turn onto Camp Road especially if there is a lot of traffic. At George L Griffith, You don't have to swing out to make the turn because it just bears off to the right. Hope this helps. There are no low overhanging limbs this route either.
We go there every year and love it. We will be there mid June this year.
They do have fire rings. Hope this helps.

We stayed there in May 2010 for a couple of nights. We found it to be a wonderful park.
