Well I went and did it, made the mistake of taking a DP out for a test drive. MH is in great shape (2000 Kountry Star), DW liked the floor plan, with newer tires and a lot of options. I can't compare it to anything similar but it seemed to get up to speed ok, but you won't win any drag races.

The dealer agrees that a 260 HP diesel is not the best but he did drive it back from Florida to Ontario and said it did well but that you need to plan your passes.

He also stated that it may be possible to get the diesel HP upped by Cummings reprogramming the chip. (just be be clear, he did not state it was possible, only that he had heard of it)

Can anyone comment on this motor (good bad) and the possiblity of reprogramming to higher HP?

I can live with the lower HP if it gets me in a DP at a good price. Anyone else have this engine?

Thanks

Chris

The only way to answer that is to know exactly what engine it has.
Is it a "Cummins" (no g) 5.9?

Damn - the "g" slipped in - the dealer and I were talking about that as well!

Anyhow yes, I beleive it it the 5.9 IBL(?) based on my memory looking at the manual.

Nothing wrong with the motor, will outlast the mh and I only wished I had 260 hp but it gets along real good. Just my thought's.

a 5.9L cummins ISB has a lot of aftermarket performance upgrades. That older diesel is bullet proof, taken care of it will run for hundreds of thousands of miles.

We had that engine, many years ago, and loved it. It is also more fuel efficient than you might expect if you mess with it.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I can live with the lower HP - it still gets me into a DP with air bags etc. Based on comments here and other places everyone is pretty happy with this motor as is. No problems with 26000 GVWR and pulling a TOAD. In fact some older comments talk about how well they do perform.
I guess you don't need 400+ HP on a 36 footer moderately loaded.

I've made an offer to the dealer based on my Bounder as a trade, I hope he isnt laughing too hard at this point but I started at what I thought was low end (you can never retract a high offer).

Thanks

It might be slow but I would bet it is one of those that gives terrirficc fuel mileage.

The only people that can answer this question are Cummins and Allison.
