Trying to scout out the drive from CO Springs to Durango. Looks like the most direct is Hwy 24 to Hwy 285, then Hwy 160 into Durango. Are these highways going to be huge mountain after mountain? Not sure if my tow vehicle wants to do it if it is.

You could go down I-25 to Walsenburg and then west on 160 from there. That route avoids some of the mountain driving and may be a little faster. You have to go over Wolf Creek Pass either way. It's a pretty steep pass, but I think that when people just try to take it easy and enjoy the drive, mountain travel isn't that difficult. You don't say when you are taking the trip and that can be a factor. It is a really beautiful area of Colorado and I hope you enjoy the trip.

As Miles mentioned, either way will work fine, beautiful scenery either route. We tend to go out of the Springs to the west, due to the fact that my wife grew up in Woodland Park, so that has to be on the route we take. When we lived in Ouray Colorado, on occasion, returning from visiting family in Oklahoma, we would turn off at Walsenburg, head to Durango and north to Ouray, depending on the time of the year, weather and what we were driving. Also take a copy of C.W. McCall's song about Wolf Creek Pass, to listen to as you drive it. C.W. (real name was Bill Friese) was mayor of Ouray, for some of the years we lived in Ouray.

Wolf Creek Pass is not for the faint of heart. Avoid it if you can. What are you driving? "Pretty steep" is an understatement. It goes up, it goes down. Check you brakes and your heart.

This is by far the prettiest route. I would take it.

That is the route we take whenever we go over to Durango, very scenic. Just go down from a pass in the same gear and at the same speed you go up the pass, never has failed me. There are plenty of turnouts and passing lanes, should be a fairly easy drive, just sit back and enjoy the scenery!

I just don't agree with this overstatement. I've driven two different fivers and the bus plus toad over this pass numerous times. Just take it easy and enjoy the beautiful views. About average for Colorado mountain passes.

There are so many choices in CO, and all of them are scenic. I like 50 all the way to Montrose, then south on 550 to Durango. Black Canyon of the Gunnison has a great camping area right on the canyon. And 550 after Ouray is one of my all time favorites. Scary at times but breath taking.

Wolf Creek pass isn't that bad take your time if you're intimidated. It doesn't really matter which way you decide on you're not going to get to Grand Junction without at least one pass being a part of the route.
