Another option you might consider, south out of Alamosa (US 285) to Antonito, west on Hiway 17 over Cumbres Pass (not as steep as Wolf Creek Pass) to Chama, then west on to Hiway 64, north on 84 up to Pagosa Springs, then west on 160 to Durango.

Thanks for the option Milo, I hadn't thought of that route and it does not look that much farther than going over Wolf Creek and we have not seen that area. Love this site I can plan our trips just from reading other peoples posts, lots of good suggestions.
