I'm brand new to RVs. I'm looking at a 2000 Tioga today and if it is as advertised will most likely purchase it. I plan to use it as temporary living quarters until I can get a place of my own. To that end I want to use the over cab sleeping area for the only bed and gut the rest of them to get more living space. I would leave one side of the built in dinette chairs and the table. The other side of it would be pulled out along with the queen bed and the sofa. The carpeting would also come up and be replaced with vinyl flooring.

Can anybody spot potential problems with this plan? I'll check for wires, plumbing, etc. before tearing anything out.

Resale and the fact that some support systems (water pump, etc) may be hidden in those locations.

What Scott said. After you shred the interior and turn it into a bachelorette pad, your ability to sell it later will be very limited.

"I plan to use it as temporary living quarters until I can get a place of my own"

What do you mean by 'temporary'? You'll have a lot of time/effort/$$$ tied up in your 'remodel' that could probably be better used towards getting that place of your own..........unless you plan on long term 'temporary'

Leave it as is.......enjoy it. Custom remodels are hard to recover costs or sell.
OR look for a different RV with a floor plan that fits your needs.

I also vote for buying a coach that fits your needs without changing anything, or changing very little. You'll probably find after your remodeled your coach that the changes you made don't work as well as you thought they would. That's why manufacturers don't make a coach that is exactly what you want. As others suggested, you'd also have a hard time getting any of your money back at time of resale.

I meant temporary as in a few years. The problem I'm running into is that all the manufacturers seem to want to try and cram as much bed space into the trailers as possible. I only need 1 bed and it only needs to be a twin. I sleep all curled up and have found queens to just be a waste of space in the past.

I'm still kind of bouncing between travel trailers(lack of heavy tow vehicle) and cheap class c's(lack of usable space). I found a few travel trailers that I really liked but I think I would hate not being able to move them. The class c Tioga's I'm looking at wouldn't work in their current configuration. I don't have a time line though. Hopefully something will pop up that fits me better.

I hadn't really considered resale. I like to camp and figured I'd just keep it for that afterwards.

YUP,
As already mentioned, the resale value will go directly down the toilet as soon as you gut it.
1. Does it have slide(s), if so, there's your more living space without gutting anything.
2. I would keep the queen bed,(much more room to sprawl out)
& find one with the entertainment center in the cabover.
3.As far as the carpet, I would leave it (unless it's shot), much warmer on the feet when the temp drops.
4. I always considdered our sofa as part of our "living space".
What are you going to put into all this open space after you gut it?

2000 model ???? Resale value is most gone already. Its over ten years old so then you might have problems even parking it in some of the finer society CGs

To me a sofa is an obstruction. LOL I don't watch much TV and when I do it's generally on the laptop. I'm 5'3". I don't even use all of my twin when I sprawl.

Thanks for the frank advice everyone. I'm going to keep looking for something that doesn't need to be half demolished.

I might have found something. I spotted a "too good to be true" deal on an older class A near my mom. She has RV experience so she's going to scout it out and give her opinion on it.

One problem that you'll have at the time of resale if you do major remodeling to the interior is the prospective buyers will look at you RV or online pictures and then Google the same RV online for more pictures and specifications.

One of their first questions will be "how much will it cost me to undo most of those changes?". That's where your modifications will bite you.

There are RVs out there with 2 single beds. Flip up the mattress on the 2nd single bed and use it for storage. If the sofa is not free standing, lift up the seat several inches. If it is a built-in unit, most likely the tub for the outside basement storage comes right up 8 inches through the floor under the sofa - 'kinda nixes removing the sofa.
