The threads where the anode rod goes on my Suburban water heater aren't all neat and pretty. When I try to screw in a new Suburban anode rod it only goes in half way. Is this normal? If not, is there something I can use (toothbrush alone did not work) to clean up the threads so the anode rod will go in further?

Thanks!

They just don't thread in all the way. I use a little thread tape on mine, just 'cause.

Yes, that's normal...the the threads are tapered. Wrap it a couple of times with Teflon Tape and screw it in. If it doesn't leak you are good to go.

Three trailers with a Suburban WH and none of the anode rods screwed in 'all the way'.

I suppose you could run a pipe thread tap in to clean it out if you stop when your supposed to.

The threads are pipe thread which are tapered. They are designed not to go all the way in.
The anode needs to contact the metal of the tank. Go easy on the Teflon tape or use pipe dope.
