A standard sanitizing job as used to perpare new watermains for service is to use a concentration of 55 parts per million and let it set for 16 to 24 hours then flush. 50PPM is about 2 ounces of household bleach in 50 gallons of water. High concentrations of bleach can destroy rubber parts such as your pump diaphram and the o rings and seals in faucets.

If I didn't screw up the math (entirely possible) and the web pages I based my calculations are right...
50 gallons = 189.270589 litres
1 ppm = 1 drop / 50 liters
So 55 ppm in 50 gallons is approximately 208.2 drops of bleach
That's approximately 10.5 ml of bleach or .0443809048 cups.

That's less than 5/100 of a cup of bleach for 50 gallons, which is less than 1/10 of a cup per 100 gallons, and I always rounded up.
Even 1/4 cup for an entire tank would be overkill.

The 1/4 cup I suggested earlier was based on Clorox's suggestion for emergency conditions with cloudy water and only 30 minutes sitting. For clear water Clorox suggested 1/2 the number of drops which would be 1/8 cup. And that's even more than the calculation above for 100 gallons.

1/4 cup per 15 gallons was probably based on something someone posted as to what they did and probably has no scientific basis.

Spent the weekend sanitizing the water system. Oh craps way too much bleach and still can't get all the bleach taste and smell from the water. Measured wrong then on top of it forgot to close the low point drains and dump over half of the over measure on the ground dag. Well lessons learned and will just have to keep flushing till we are good again.

Vinegar solution neutralized the bleach.

A 1/4 cup to 15 gal. is what my owners manual says to use. Same as my previous rv owners manual.

Well, I didn't get a manual with my RV and it's my first RV so there ya go.

I wonder how the RV manufacturers came up with that number, it would be interesting to know. How long does your manual say to leave it in?

I don't know what to tell ya, except that 1/4cup/15gal works fine, and I've done it enough times to know that it is harmless to the rig. But I wouldn't drink it. I don't leave it any longer than necessary to fill the tank, run it until I can smell it at each fixture, then drain it and run each fixture again until it smells clear.

Chlorine is cheap. And I'm not buying it in quantities necessary to sanitize a city water system. But if your goal is to use the smallest amount possible, and you want to wait a day or whatever for it to work, suite yourself.

Hey guys,
I think there are two conversations going on here.
One is dealing with treating the water to make it drinkable.
The other is talking about sanatizing the system and then flushing it before storing drinking water.
What do you think?

I never get lost! Someone always tells me where to go!

Well ... I say ... just Screw It. ANY on board water should be use exclusively for showering, flushing and tooth brushing. Coffee maker gets bottled, as does drinkable. What else is there?

Cheers~!
