How much did you use? How big is your FW tank?

I use 1/4 cup per 15 gals. That's more than many people use, but it doesn't hurt anything and I know it is effective.

I pour it right down the gravity fill, immediately followed up with the water hose.

Didn't even consider the hot water heater. Thought buy running the pump with the valves open both Hot and cold at the same time it would get it. Now that I think about it it does seems it is more the Hot water than the cold.

As for how much embarrassed to say but tank is 85 gal and I used about 2 gal of bleach. Since the low drain points were open and I was not sure instead of 1 gal I added the second to be sure. Probably where I went wrong.

Okay, yeah, that IS a lot!

Still, don't think you need to do anything but drain it, and run enough through to clear the HWH. That is strong enough to kill your lawn, but I guess it is too late for that info.

Would it be a good idea to mix some vinegar with that bakng soda? LOL

I have used both but not together. IMO the baking soda worked better without any after taste.

Mix about a quarter cup of baking soda into a couple of gallons of water and add it to the tank. Then fill the tank and run the water thru the system and let sit for a few hours. Then flush it out and you should be good.

Wow, 2 gallons of bleach? If left very long it could damage something. Bleach is nasty stuff.

It doesn't take a lot of bleach to sterilize water. Clorox only talks about 8 drops (clear water) to 16 drops (cloudy water) per gallon to make water safe to drink.

For my 60 ish gallon tank that's 1056 drops with the higher dose.
20 drops is supposed to be a milliliter.
That means for 60 gallons I need 52.8 milliliters or .22317255 cups.
That's only 1/4 cup.

I know I've read you should use 1/4 cup per 15 gallons on several sites; that's 4 times the concentration Clorox lists as required to make even cloudy water safe.
It sounds a little overkill to me for regular maintenance, but it should certainly do the job.
Just be sure to let it sit in the system for at least 30 minutes.

The Clorox recommendation is if you are going to drink the treated water. I don't drink it, I run it through the system and then drain it. I would not recommend consuming a 1/4 cup per 15 gallon concentration.
