I assume we would need passports to camp in Canada for 3 days ? We are looking into taking a 3 day trip to Niagara falls and may want to stay on the Canadian side ?? Thinking about Memorial day , is that enough time to get a passport?? What does one cost ?

I just got my passport this year. I think it took less than a month. Although most do it at a post office I had to do it at town hall (small town). Filled out a form, got my picture taken, showed my drivers license and an old passport for ID (memory not so good on this). I think the form asks if you are in a hurry. I wasn't.

Going to be tight getting passports in time. You are giving the government bureaucracy too much credit.

Passports can be expedited (for a fee). Search for third party passport service providers on Google. I once got one renewed in 7 days....

You'll need them to get back in to the USA more than to get into Canada.

Don't need passports to camp in Canada.
BUT need your passport to return to the USA.

To the OP - you do not need a passport to enter Canada, even though the Canadian Border agent might ask you if you have one BUT - you do need that passport, or equivalent from some states, to re-enter the US.

To the OP: When I applied for my passport in 2008 it took 16 days for me to receive it in the mail. You have plenty of time if you act now.

OMG....I have waited and waited for this moment..to find an actual error in a posting of Sue's. Be still my pounding wee heart....

A US citizen returning TO the US does NOT require a passport. It IS recommended, yes, but there are other kinds of identification that meet the requirements. A phone call to a border office will give the currant best options.

And, as Sue correctly pointed out...no passport required to enter Canada. Some form of ID, yes, but not the passport.
