LOL Isn't that like profanity in this section?
Just wait till the moderator see's this

Maybe I'm getting old but the HP wars seem to be getting costly on sticker price and out of pocket repair's.
No I don't NEED that much power.

I have to agree 100% with that statement.

As far as the Can-Am set up you can't argue with the results that guy gets out of his set ups. I wouldn't do it but then again most TT were towed mostly with cars until like the early seventies.

As I recall the other "what I saw" thread, the rig visibly LOOKED bad.

So far this rig only looks bad ON PAPER.

How did it look on the road? I mean, if it's sitting level and not lurching around, weaving, swaying, etc., there's probably nothing wrong with it.

That Buick is no a China Bomb, it's built by GM and may have had a V8, I think that is an option. Looked at the Traverse about a year ago to tow our boat when we didn't want to use the diesel pickup, but mileage at around 23 on the highway wasn't good enough to replace our 35 mpg, on the highway, Camry hybrid so we didn't pursue it further. The Traverse is the Chevy version of the Enclave.

The Buick Enclave has only one engine and that is the 3.6 V6, there isn't a V8 option available.

The term China Bomb refers to the trailers tires not the Buick.

I am not the weight police and generally try not to get involved in alot of "can i tow this" discussions. But this weekend as the campground I saw a Buick Enclave which is a little SUV pulling about a 33 foot Airstream TT. Curiousity got the best of me so I started googling the setup to see If I wss right. Max towing capacity was 4500 lbs. It has a wopping 280ish horsepower v-6 and torque wasnt even listed. The Airstream looks to have a 6000ish lb dry weight. WTF. I wanted to ask them what they were thinking so bad but decided to not get involved. If you see that coming down the road towards you run, its got to be dangerous. Am I missing something here. Is there an engine that was put in these things I didnt see online

It's not a 'little' SUV...curb weight list as 4780 lbs....it has a 6 speed transmission...it seats 7 or 8, depending on options...the tire size is 255/60 X 19.

It has a 288 hp engine...3.6 liter V6..DOHC...same basic engine as the base Camaro...but a few ponies less. That's about the same hp (290) that the last 454 V8 was rated at...the 454 had more torque...but only 4 speeds.

It is rated at 4500 lbs maximum and I agree with you, because I'm persnickety about tow ratings I wouldn't tow 6000 lbs with it.

But I've seen worse and the Buick Enclave is pretty solid and not what I would describe as small.

There was a brief towing review on the Buick towing an Airstream a few years ago. Here is a taste of the content...

.... several customers towing with Buick Enclaves one with a 25' Front Bedroom the rest have 30-34's. To me it is a far superior chassis to tow with than the old fashioned truck chassis suburban. The body structure is like a brick with no rattles or squeeks in it.

This summer on the way to the Rally in PEI one of the units in our Group was a Enclave with a 99 34'. I drove it for 100 miles in Northern New Brunswick which has several 9% grades. It was so quiet you had to use cruise control to keep the speed reasonable. The 3.6 litre has a very wide powerband which combined with the 6 speed transmission gives excellent performance and better mileage than any of the other 4 rigs in our group. I also did a couple of test drives with it in PEI on very rough frost heaved roads the long suspension travel gave a smooth ride and excellent control. Other than the Porshe or the BMW X5 I would say it is the best handling SUV I have ever towed with but it rides better than the Porsche or BMW. And you can buy two for the same price.

The owner of this particular Enclave is retired from GM and has been towing since 1973 with a couple of dozen different tow vehicles, everything from Suburbans and pick ups to sedans and vans. He feels this is the best tow vehicle he has used.

So don't panic there is a replacement for displacement.

Airstreams.... the best towing trailers on the planet!

Engine power or not, I would be more concerned with the weight and wheelbase length of the SUV, versus the weight and length of the trailer. Sounds like a bit much for a small car chassis based crossover SUV to be pulling.

What SoCal said. Seems like that setup would be the tail wagggin' the dog if it got squirrely.

I can assure you that the Hitch under that enclave is better connected to the TV than most of ours, and it is super reinforced.

I spoke with Andy at length about the hitches he custom builds. He said that they attach the the hitch, not only to the unit body construction but to the rear... now, I am trying to get the terminology right....suspension subframe structure..

Something along those lines.

I have seen a few of those hitches from underneath... they are extremely robust and mounted in multiple locations.

Thanks!
