I had an aux. tranny cooler put on my 06 LBZ. It would get warm pulling my 14K TH on the steeper grades. I did this two years ago and I have yet to hit over 210 degrees on the tranny temp since.
I agree that these trucks dont like to lug. They will get warm.

If overheating was such a big problem don't you think there would be a company making the cooling kits and make millions?
Sorry, this isn't a debate on "if" these trucks overheat. Just responding to OP on issues that may contribute to the high transmission heat numbers.
To OP -which grades are problematic for you - maybe the pull back out of the S Fork Boise River from Pine/Featherville. This is a workout for my 06 LBZ pulling a 14K toyhauler. Tranny temps are well over 200* coming out of here. Imagine going up and over the hump going to the Boy Scout camp area (head waters of the S Fork Boise) from Fairfield would be the same but haven't done that one with this truck yet.
It runs hot going up 20 towards toll gate to the Anderson Ranch cutoff, which is not that steep. I just feel it gets hot too easy.

Not steep @ 6% but long and enough curves to slow traffic. Ambient temps in summer are high too.
Key is maintaining speed and rpm. Anything 2K and lower rpm wise is lugging -letting rpm drop to much before down shift induces extra heat loading. Do you monitor exhaust gas temp and coolant temp? Coolant gauge on dash is not accurate on these trucks. They read low and slow in response.
Really think you should investigate the DIY auxilary cooling system mod previously linked for your summer conditions. Reason is cost benefit ratio, but it really depends on your plans for the truck long term.

I have yet to see an Allison overheat unless it is either to full/low on fluid, has old fluid and/or dirty internal screen, or the tranny cooler is full of bug gunk or road debris.

These are all very good points. One of the first and easiest things to determine is correct fluid level. Fluid is not old per OP with a recent service. Hopefully the spin on filter was changed and magnet cleaned / reinstalled. Cleaning the cooler front and the radiator stack is important periodic service too!
Yes, coolant egt and transmission fluid temps would help.

The Temp gauge has only pegged one time going through Craters of the moon in Idaho on a very hot day.
It seems to hit 275 degrees maybe a bit higher towing up grades, sure I am towing fully loaded but it seems high to me....Maybe not.
I did order 2 16" fans to put in front of the tranny cooler and radiator to help push air.
I also did not know about kepping the RPMs up, I have always been easy on the pedal and eased up in tow haul mode.
Is it better to use/not use tow haul in the hills?

The one in the video I linked gets into the red on the gauge.

The dmax already has an installed oil cooler, haven't heard of a need to replace it unless it has been clogged with wear metals for some reason. Merchant Automotive sells them along with many other dmax parts. I replaced the stock trans cooler on my 06 LBZ with a Setrab aftermarket cooler which was a bolt on replacement with more fluid tubes and more surface area. It was a very noticeable improvement. Bought mine from the Dmax Store. The PPE model they now sell uses the same Setrab core as the one I bought. The MikeL cooler mentioned earlier is also a very good aftermarket cooler. They aren't cheap but they do make a pronounced improvement. I rarely see mine over 140 degrees without towing. Towing my 11K 5er, the worst I've seen it is 190, most times it's in the 160-180 range. Also previously mentioned, the Allison is sensitive to overheating if fluid is overfilled, make sure you check it when its hot. Allison also makes an optional deep pan which adds something like 3.5 more qts of fluid, you need to change the internal filter to a longer one as well. It really won't effect the temp much, the fluid will eventually reach the same temp just take longer. But I like the little bit of extra fluid capacity.

OP how hot is hot? You have a dash trans temp gauge correct?
My 04 D max trans has never gone above 220 degrees with stock cooler....that's in 100 degree weather crossing the scale at 19000lbs total
Watching my air inlet temps....a cold air intake is useless...save your $$$
I have to add..my truck is bone stock except for the mouthpiece that was a waste of time and $$
