I purchased a 2000 Salem Lite and decided today to test a bunch of stuff before i tear into it. (another issue).
Anyway the batteries are toast so i used my dads EU2000 to run lights ect. Well we tested the fridge/freezer with the inverter plugged in and it seemed like it was ok. Soon after the inverter ran out of gas and after a few hrs we checked to make sure the fridge was still goIng. (it wasnt) does the fridge require battery power to stay running?
Also we tried to see if it would start the AC unit using the EU2000, the fan on the ac unit would turn on right away and after realizing the EU2000 didnt rev up at all that the compressor wasnt kicking on or even attempting to. What are we missing? If the inverter isnt enough shouldnt it atleast attempt (rev up) to start it or do I have a major problem?
Fridge needs constant 12v to run. Inverter??? I think you mean generator? 2000watts may not be enough to start some older 13.5k AC units Usually 2400watts will and a 3000watt generator definately will.
Fridge will run on electric but usually needs 12 volts for control board. Refrig will run on 12 volt and propane. Some will argue, but usually a Honda 2000 will not start a 13.5k a/c. At 12 years old the start capacitor could be getting tired. If you replace it, use a hard start capacitor like the Supco 6. That would be a bigger help if you plan to use a generator.
It sounds to me like the AC unit didn't try to start it's compressor. That could be because it was too cold for the thermostat setting, or some larger issue. The Honda generator will try to start a 13.5K AC, but will either blow the breaker or bog down, you'll know. Have it on high speed, not economy mode, if you try again.
Vintage, u are correct when u say it sounds like it didnt even try to start. Thats what has me scared thats its a bigger issue. Generator (inverter) didnt even rev up at all.
I think I would replace the batteries then take it someplace with a power hookup and try everything on the shore power and charged batteries before making any decisions about what does and doesn't work.
