Well after what was a great first winter south we get the terrific news that our GM retiree out of province medical coverage has been reduced to just thirty days, any thoughts or remedies?

You just left home a week ago, right? How do they tell how long you have been gone? Or is it up to 30 days of coverage if you need it outside the province?

CSA has great information but their coverage is not only expensive I think it might be from Manulife. The worst(and largest) insurer in Canada.

They know how long you have been gone - your passport gets swiped at the border, they can check credit card purchases and it is definitely not worth lying. If you have a claim, the insurance company will do everything possible to check validity to avoid having to pay. With medical costs in the US being much higher than in Canada you want to make sure you have proper coverage before traveling. Some things are not worth gambling on and this is one of them.

The CSA (Canadian Snowbird Assoc) has a great publication that outlines all the rules concerning time away from your home province, US regs on visiting the USA etc. They also offer medical coverage.

Moisheh:

What Insurance Company/Emergency Health Coverage Plan do you then recommend for Canadians travelling south for the winter?

I have 30 day coverage, any number of trips, as well through my retiree medical coverage. I called the carrier and was told I can purchase extra days from them, however I can not purchase add on days from other companies. You may want to check with your carrier. We also found it cheaper to fly back home for a few days and restart the clock on the 30 days and pay 15 day add on each end than buy 60 extra days. Your health situation and age make a difference.

Although neither your insurance carrier or the Province can access your passport or credit card records lying about how long you have been away is just plain stupid! The onus is on you to prove how long you have been away. They will ask for CG reciepts, fuel purchase, hotel reciepts, etc. To answer Toban's question: Stay away from Manulife or any of the policies they underwrite with another name. I happen to like RBC. Do not use price as the deciding factor. Find other Canadians who have actually had claims and ask about the experience. Saving a few$$ could be a disaster. I am sure that by next season the rates will be much higher.
