I don't know whether any one else saw this, but there was a recent announcement that Canada was going to implement some changes to allowing tourists with a less serious offence a ONE TIME entry into Canada. This would be for a non custodial sentence and would only be for the one time only. This would prevent the denial of a whole bus load full of hunters because one of them had a DUI.
This seems to make reference to the changes, but I didnt think it was this long ago.

I think this is a good idea but the US should reciprocate.

Doesn't say limited to ONLY ONE time entry it says with ONE minor offense. Entry would be non restrictive provided only the one offense on file.

The US should reciprocate. The Canadians will not let us work there either. Heck they were upset when I had my electrical tools with me in a tool box.
Fair is fair and right is right. Give me a reason why they should have rules that we don't for entry and work.

What makes you think that Canadians can work in America without following channels?

I wasn't aware that the US had the same restrictions on CN drivers with a DUI on their record.
At any rate, it seems like both countries could lighten up a little bit without significantly endangering their populations. Maybe something like only one DUI conviction, but no moving violations of any kind in the last 20 or 30 years, or maybe allow someone to cross the border but only as a passenger. (Maybe they already do).
When I crossed the border, they asked me if I'd ever been fingerprinted. I told them I didn't think so unless I was fingerprinted when I joined the Navy, which at that time was over 40 years ago. I can't remember what I did 40 hours ago. But they let me in.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

The original article, which I couldn't find, did say that. It said that the intention was for Americans attempting to enter Canada, who were not aware of the restrictions, to be allowed in that ONE time, but the next time they would have to go through the exception process beforehand.

Let's keep this on the topic of crossing the border and not on the subject of working in either country.

You can buy a pass from the border agency going either way. It is not cheap but that is how you get a pass to enter with a criminal record going either way for impaired driving. If its more serious than that you have a problem and need to talk to them prior to attending the border or you will likely be turned back. The USA has access to CPIC and Canada has access to NCIC so you will be checked.

They don't.. Canadians can travel to the US all day long with a DUI on their record. It's been that way for a long time.
But for US citizens traveling to Canada, its a different story.
