PS-thought about the sliding drawer idea, I would do that but this is only temporary. I'll be putting a utility body on the truck within the next month so I'm not going to waste the time/money to build the drawers to this bed, I'll wait to do it with the utility body.

Only If you don't want the storage under the camper. You appear to be bolting right in the middle of the storage bays?

Besides which, the plywood will tend to be more springy than going into/thru the 4x4s on the edge.

I'm just thinking that in any RV, storage is at a premium. I was going to ask if it'd be too tall over the truck, if you went to 4x6s, or tripled 2x4s flat to get a deeper drawer space. If you are tall it might even be more comfortable when/if you 'back' out the door, to have the taller step-down.

Per your PS,,, then it really doesn't matter, does it? Do what ever is easy and use dimensional lumber that you can reuse. If you don't have a need for lumber. Whatever is cheapest.

Oh by the by. You don't need the plywood in that case, it'd probably just be a waste of wood, unless you are going to need blocking above the new body, as well. All you really need for now is the 3 stringers, one down the middle of the walkway and one on each side. Bolt to the ones on the sides. Done and done.

Heck grab a couple of pallets, cut to fit and lag bolt them in!

or just grab 4ea. 1/2" bolts with LARGE fender washers or plates and thru bolt the whole thing.

Since the campers only 50" wide and my bed is 60" Ill have 5" on each side...should I put some blocking on the sides to prevent any lateral forces from shearing the bolts? Or do any of you guys who have their campers bolted down worry about that?

For the permanent install maybe. Wouldn't worry about it for now. My guess is that unless you are more minimalistic than most of us you'll be wanting to build in all the compartments for storage you can once you get the utility bed in place. Then you can design in what you need.

You have Flyrods to pack or spinning and baitcasters? Waders? Inflatable boat? Awning room? Shower/bathroom tent? Grill?

Just a few of the possibilities.

AS to shearing 4ea 1/2" bolts. More likely to tear them out of the camper or open the floor of the bed like a sardine can.

I would use some blocking , can be simple and temporary . Not because the bolts could shear but because the bolts could cut through the thin sheet metal of the truck bed , especially with open space between the TC floor and the truck bed as per your sketch . It would be better to bolt through the spacer and have a hard connection all the way through.

Yep, that's the ticket. Only put down a rubber mat first.
