We can save about 200 miles of travel plus about $110 in tolls (maybe more) if we cross from Sault Ste. Marie Michigan through Canada on Hwy 17 to Sherbrooke Quebec and then to Maine.
Previously we planned to travel from Point Edward, Ontario down Hwy 402 to Montreal and overnight at the Walmart in Sherbrooke before entering Maine, but now need an additional night enroute. I was thinking of stopping to rest overnight at the Walmart in Pembroke Ontario.
Has anyone stayed at Pembroke?

I know route 17 well, having had a job in Sudbury in the 70s. It will take you less than a day to drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Sherbrooke.
That's assuming you've found a good way through/around Montreal. Check with a member who knows local Montreal conditions now. There are a few: Jambo, Packer Backer, JackD........
I have driven from east of Rimouski to almost Sudbury in one day.
There are interesting places to stop on the way and you might find it good to check.
& much as I like eastern Quebec, I will agree crossing the border at Island Pond and taking the Aaron Burr trail through Maine is scenic driving.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Can't help you with Pembroke but there is a Walmart at the Quartier Dix30 (locally, we call it the '10-30') that you can stay at. It's just south of Montreal on highway 10.

I would stay on 417 (17) in Ontario to the 40 in Quebec then onto the Louis Hippolyte Lafontaine Bridge-Tunnel (Pont-Tunnel Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine). It will lead you onto highway 20 where you can then get onto the 30 west directly to highway 10 to Sherbrooke.
Avoid highway 20 that leads to the Champlain Bridge. There are constant closures and weight limitation througout what we call the Turcotte interchange. Last week one section was closed again. Also beware that the Mercier bridge is also undergoing closures and restrictions.

you cuold also try overnigthing in one of the provincial parks in or around Pembroke such as Samuel Champlain, or Driftwood. They are very close to Hwy17 and would offer a nice alternative to the Walmart parking lot.
Montreal can be a dogs breakfast for traffic and construction - transport quebec has a website (french only) that you can review that will outline traffic and mainly major construction projects throughout the province. Check it out, and use google translator if you do not understand french.
good luck on your trip

You might like to consider the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie. It is a very nice scenic drive. On a clear day there are some awesome views including a few where you can see the curvature of the earth. If you would like some additional information, email me.

Thank you for the replies.
Memory is not the greatest...but I think that Packer helped with a Southern route past Montreal in a previous query. I am dropping down from 417 to Valley Field and then to the 30 over to the 10. The shopping center at DIX30 looks amazing. Don't know if we can drive that in one day.
I think Little Kopit is faster than me. It looks like about 1150KM from Sault Ste. Marie to Sherbrooke. We do one 1170KM day when we leave home..familiar roads and lots of adrenaline. For us that is about 16 hours of driving. Since we will be in unfamiliar territory it may take a little longer. Plus lots of new stuff to see and we tend to drive about 95KMH.
When traveling, we tend to stop late and leave early in the morning and don't want to impact people in campgrounds who are there to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Some campgrounds even have a locked gate and aren't too happy to open up at first light or earlier. We have campground reservations at our destination.
We typically rest at Truckstops as they are open 24/7 and we can get fuel, supplies, and even eat at the restaurant any time day or night. I didn't notice any nice truckstops listed on Hwy 17/417, will do some more research. In New Brunswick there are some Irvine Big Stops that we use.
The Thunder Bay route would be great. I will keep it in mind for a future trip...hope to keep doing this for a few more years. Its always fun to try different routes and see more of North America.

We go to Pembroke & Petawawa each year. The CFB at Petawawa has a good military museum and a CG that is open to the public if you can find it. Pembroke has Riverside Park that is on the Ottawa river and a nice stop. Pembroke has murals painted on almost everry vacant brick wall in downtown. I even have a couple of relatives in one of the paintings.

Jack D indicates that Sault Ste. Marie to Sherbrooke is about 1300KM and 15+ hours of driving so I really think we need a rest stop in the middle some place. I need to be fresh and alert when traveling on unfamiliar roads.
Have not found any nice truck stops along the stretch of Hwy 17 we will travel. Even some trucking forums lament the lack of good stops on this section.
There is a Super Walmart in Renfrew that looks like a good place to pull over, do some shopping and rest. Then the next morning we could stop for awhile around Rideal canal and Ottawa before continuing down to the 10/30. Looks like a nice place to do a little shopping and rest before heading out on the next section of our trip.
Oh, Dix30 is even on Wikipedia. It looks like you could spend a couple of days just touring the shops, the sports complex, and trying out the restaurants. Plus they now have a Tim's so I can get some coconut covered chocolate Tim Bits ;-).

That is likely the best way now if you are in no real hurray; the roads are good. My previous recommendation just assumed you wanted to stay on 417 to the 40.
The 10-30 complex is an amazing place; tons of shopping and some great restaurants.
Enjoy your trip.
