My 4 year old son is very interested and we are looking at a possibly Nascar race in the near future. Nascar fans, any ideas on which racetracks are most suitable for family events and young kids to attend? We have just got into the sport and are not familiar--any info. would be greatly appreciated. Wondering also, campgrounds nearby tracks that are great for our family to stay at while our stay at the race.

We go to a couple of nascar races every year, but have never camped.
Most often there is camping (boondocking) on the infield or like at Las Vegas, along the back stretch. It is very crowded and expensive however but looks like fun.

Lowe's in Charlotte has a campground and then they have fields. Lots to do around this track. Bass Pro Shop, Concord mill mall. Every kind of restaurant you would want. The main campground is HIGH to stay at but has full hookups. the fields well you will need power, water and use potta-Johns. I have stayed only at the fields for campgrounds. I take a generator, my own water and use my pot for most everything else. I have taken my kids, my wife and we have had a good time. If you watch, you can see the camper site that are more kid friendly, pick a site nearer them. When you see the old school buses that might be a sign. Campgrounds can get REAL rowdy but they are good about midnight and quiet hour. If i were to go again I would stay at Morehead Farm family Campground behind the track on Morehead Farm road. This runs beside the track. You can walk to the track or ride shuttle buses. Easier to walk back than wait for the buses unless you cant walk back.
I have pictures of Lowes, Rockingham(last race), Bristol on my webshots page

I see you live in Maryland. Have you thought about taking your son to the Baltimore Grand Prix? The day before the race fans are allowed in the pit area for an up close look at all the cars. There is no camping at the track but there are hotels with-in walking distance. You may want to check out the American Le Mans web site for more information. Can you guess we have special ties to ALMS ? This may be perfect for a 4yr old.

Its really not that expensive to stay at the track. We go to phoenix alot and there are alot of people. But it great when the race is over and instead of sitting in traffic your cooking some steaks and relaxing.

I would definitely suggest somewhere that promotes a family atmosphere. The last time I was at Indy (been a few years), there was lots of alcohol induced behavior and language where a small child might get an early education.

I have camped at Chicagoland (infield and outside the track), Indy (across the street from Indy anyway), Bristol, and Road America...

I'd say it's sort of a crapshoot on the atmosphere unless the area is specifically labeled as family camping (though one of the rowdiest crowds i watched a race around was in the family seating section at Bristol??). One of the quietest spots I've had is my infield space at Chicagoland.....but if I walk down to a different turn I"ve found live bands and stripper poles (seriously). Road America was pretty calm too (and awesome!).

I'd say pick a track first and then start asking folks where they stay.

Charlotte also has Nascar Hall of Fame and museum downtown. A bit of a drive but worth it. Interactive displays kids love.
Also Daytona in FL has lots to do around the racetrack.
