I think there are still some misunderstandings about the route here.

I'm on my 3rd version of Streets and Trips - so I'm assuming the route you are talking about is the same one that has been mapped out on every one of my Streets and Trips maps when I seek directions for a travel route between Sudbury and Thunder Bay - without punching in any other waypoints in between.

Streets and Trips will take you out of Sudbury on 35 to 144 then up 144 to an intersection across from Hwy 560 and labelled on Streets and Trips as the "Sultan Industrial Road". The indicated route then takes you on that road to Sultan then on to 129 and finally to 101 and on to Wawa.

This is the "shortcut" that myself and some others have been talking about - and it is the route that Streets and Trips will pick every time.

I apologize for being persistent in clarifying an understanding of the route here - maybe I'm the one that is a little confused - but the "Sultan Industrial Road" that I have known in the past is not one I would ever consider taking our trailer down.

There - I'm done .....

Thanks,

Jay

Take 17.

I've driven the other route, going to Biscotasing Lake, and had to drive through water. Beaver dams backed up a couple streams and flooded the road. The road from 144 to 101 is dirt.

17 along Lake Superior is very scenic.

"Sultan Industrial Road". My recommendation is to avoid that road. As you are aware, it is gravel and depending when it was last graded, the conditions can be challenging. Try Sudbury, Timmins, Wawa - That is the route that I was recalling. Memory must be going also. (600 km) Sorry about the incorrect information posted earlier. Sounds to me hwy #17 is your better option.

Thank you to one and all!!! Great replies and we have determined that we will head out of Sudbury on highway 17 and head for Wawa via Sault Ste Marie. We never blindly accept either the routing of the GPS or Streets & Trips and appreciate the feedback.

On Google Maps, "Sultan Industrial Road" is visible if you zoom in enough, but it isn't in the road database. So it does not attempt to route route on this 'shortcut' between 144 and 129.

Going up 129 to 101 is a few miles shorter than staying on 17, but GM estimates a bit more time. So its preferred route is 17 the whole way.

On TomTom I can force it go to Sultan, but it makes its a detour off of 129, and even then warns me about unpaved roads.

I played with streets and trips when I moved from Ontario to Alberta. It insisted on routing me through an abandoned logging road. I found an area in the program to only take major roads, so it routed me from Northern Ontario to Northern Alberta, via Texas!

Did you specify 'major roads' or 'interstates'? You don't have interstates in Canada.

If it routes you on logging roads, blame it on the map database - one that does not give enough road-type information. Sometimes there's enough info in the database to estimate travel times, but not difficulty. In that case, asking for a fastest-route rather than a shortest-route is more likely to stay on major roads. Still my TomTom does on occasion route me on some older alignment of a road, especially on bypass around towns. There's no substitute for paying attention to the road and its signs.

I'm planning a cross-Canada trip (westbound currently) and Streets and Trips routed me out of Sudbury on route 35 to to 144 to 101 into Wawa. I had originally planned on highway 17, which we have previously travelled to the Sault but would be willing to try this alternative if it is on reasonably good roads.

Any knowledge of the 35-144-101 choice?

Thanks,
Don

Here's a link to a Youtube video that was posted about the "Shortcut" from Hwy 144 to 129/101.

144 to 101 is not a dirt road. However, 144 is narrow and curvy. Shoulders (f you need them to change a tire, for example,)especially near Sudbury end are almost non-existent. I don't like meeting up with transports on this road -- as I said, it's narrow! It is shorter to get to Timmins this way from Sudbury but I have gone by 17 up to 11 to get there just as a change from 144.

17 is much more scenic.

Definitely, do not take the Sultan road. That is a dirt road!
