About 30 years ago I had a customer bring a Windybago in with a dead cylinder. Had no compression so pulled a head, dead hole piston had these little scallops indentations in a ring around the top of the piston, was a flat top. Piston didn't move when engine was cranked. Pulled the pan, rod broke in half but in such a way it didn't hit anything, had to find a replacement rod and that was it. Now the bottom line, this was THIRTY YEARS AGO. Had a very hard time finding a replacement rod THEN. I'd be a lot more in love with a 440 if it had to be a Mopar gasser. They are pretty rare too.

Wow, a 413. Now that is Old School!
My neighbor has had a couple of older MH's with the 413 and he claimed the only thing they needed was a set of headers as the stock manifolds don't flow well and tend to warp.
I would make sure the carb is in good order and the distributor is working properly. MH distributors tend to seize the advance weights from lack of use. Other than that, enjoy the ride!

413 and 440 use the same crank & rods. They are available from dealers and many aftermarket sources.

Didn't say parts were different, 440 more common but hard to source parts either way. Most RVers aren't going to pop for aftermaket parts so that's a moot point. Some people still cling to flat head fords and Buick nail heads. I like 5.7 diesels.

The best RV engine from Dodge was the 440-3! 413 parts are hard to find. Even the 440-3 takes a special stat and I dont think it is available. The original Carter carb is obsolete. Called Thermoquad Both the 440 and 413 overheated in RV applications. Vaporlocked! The 413 will not have hardened valve seats so you either have to modify the heads or find newer ones.

No, you're not paying attention. A connecting rod for a 413 or a 440 is <$30 from Rock Auto. New aftermarket rods are often CHEAPER than reconditioning stock rods.

No, wrong!

The ThermoQuad is perfectly fine...used on everything from 318's to 440's. It works very well unless mistreated. They do not vapor lock. (In fact, one reason they were used is because of that!)

The 413 will have hardened valve seats (and usually rotators)...all HD truck and Chrysler Marine engines did, starting in the 60's.

I had one, strong engine, mainly used in marine and industrial applications
different casting block, different water jacket ports, different heads and different water pump
headers are a good idea, if they are not already there
the starter can be a b*****h to change because of the exhaust getting in the way, depends on the builder and exhaust choices

jatlaxle: Wrong! The 413 never had hardened seats. The 440-3 had hardened seats in it's final years . Around 1976 or 77. I had a 78 with no hardened seats in out 78 Vogue. Chassis was a 77. Had lots of vapour locking. Perhaps your experience was NOT in a MH. Most MH's of that era had the vapour locking problem. The summer fuel was horrible, Trailer life was full of articles and cures for the vapour locking. 454's were even worse. Mostly due to the design of the engine compartments. Nowhere for the exhuast heat to go. PU trucks never had that problem. I could fill a whole page with all the mods to cure the problem. The last year of the 413 was 1972 (maybe 73?). Still had leaded gas and no reason for hardened seats. Remeber that in the mid 70's Chrysler was in big terouble. They had lost(or fired) a lot of the engineers and produced some very bad vehicles. No cash for R&D. Lost of parts from previous years were used to complete vehicles as no new designs were available. Same year vehicles had different parts. I was a parts man in those days and it was a nightmare!
