I've noticed a small leak on my HD4060 in my 96 Executive. There are two round covers on the bottom of the pan. They have 6 bolts on each of them, and the one on the passenger side is dripping transmission fluid. Are these access to filters perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same trans and Yes, those round openings on the bottom are the two filter housings. If Im not mistaken, when you purchase a set of new filters you also get new O-rings and seals.

Just did a fluid change on my 4060 and you're absolutely right, the two round covers are the filter covers. When you buy the filter kit it comes with seals and o-rings. It's probably one of those that's leaking. I usually clean the covers and surrounding area really well before installing new filters.

Great info!

Does all the fluid drain out with the two covers removed, or do you have to drop the whole pan?

Also, is there a good online source for the filter?

No, all of the fluid doesn't drain out when you remove the filter covers and you don't have to drop the whole pan.

A good source for filters is Filter 1 on the Internet. Obviously, an Allison service center would have them as well.

Are these WIX filters? What's the best way to get the part numbers?

I have serviced many trannies before, but the Allison is new to me. Is there a good writeup on this by chance?

Hi.....Im pretty sure my part # is correct, that being Allison #29548988 for the filters. There's plenty of cross referenced filters BUT the general consenus is to stick with original Allison parts! If your going to change the filters may as well bite the bullet and go to Transynd fluid also. Good Luck!

Suggest OE Allison filter pack, which comes with all gasket AND complete instructions.

Only "special" tool is inch-pound torque wrench. Steel bolts into aluminum case. Torque specs on instruction sheet.

If you have over 15,000 miles/3 years, I would probably change fluid (using Transynd)as well as both filters.

This part number was correct! I got it from the Allison place here in SLC.

These filters have a date code on them. The old ones read 02-00. OUCH! The filters and likely the fluid had not been changed in 12 years!

Like Cher said, " turn back time". Unfortunately that's not one of your options. If it were my coach, I would do a fluid/filters change ASAP. Since your post suggests that you are mechanically pretty handy I would do the change myself. The filter kit from Allisom is packed with basic instructions and a complete set of gaskets and O rings. There are two identical filters and the single most important thing is use a torque wrench for the filter cover bolts because the tranny case is aluminum. I believe the torque range is 38-45 lbs. for the filter covers and the drain plug is 25 lbs.

If you are going to keep the coach more than a year or two, I would switch to Transynd. This will also entail doing a second change of filters and fluid within the next 12 months. At that point your transmission will be considered 100% Transynd and subject to the TES295 service intervals. Doing the work yourself will help pay for the 2 changes. Walmart will take the old fluid.

I suggest you go to the Allison forum and read some of Tom Johnson's posts. He is a retired Allison engineer and wrote the specifications for their approved fluids.
