Warner Lake is a nice CG and much cooler in the summer. It is a dirt road going in that can get potholes and washboard, just a warning. There are a few boondocking locations on the way up the Lasal Mountain Loop Road south of Moab, but scout them out on foot ahead of time to make sure you can turn around and to make sure they're not someones driveway (some private property up there).
A short walk up the trail from the CG will take you to an amazing view overlooking Canyonlands NP. Great place to watch the sunset, although the light on those red rocks from the sunrise behind you is spectacular too.
Yes, LaSal Mountains is a pretty good drive into Moab if you're doing it often. Two places with trees that come to mind are the campgrounds along the Colorado River - but bugs could be a problem, or south of Moab at Ken's Lake where some of the sites have trees. June will be hot, for sure. Have a great trip anyway!

The camping spots along the river (north and south of town) are a first come first serve and will probably be hard to get shady spots in the summer, especially on a weekend. There is also a small daily fee. I love to boondock but that time of the year is hot so if you have AC I would look into a RV park. Yes it may cost more but if you don't get a good nights sleep your vaction may not be as fun. The La Salles are great but if you plan on being in Moab everyday you will not like the drive.
Thanks for all the great info! I guess we will just plug in but we
may make a stop for a few days at the La Sal mnts area, sounds nice
too! So much to do in Moab, i guess we'll just plugin monthly rate.
Thanks again!

My experience was similar although June might not be as crowded as spring or fall. It was crazy trying to find an open camping spot along the river...actually I never did find an open spot.
