I have been a Hobie cat sailor for a number of years now and have decided to make the switch over to a mono slug..........er, hull. I am ready to just sit back and relax whilst holding the tiller in my hand and listening to the water slip past the hull. I have no need for speed anymore.
I have searched the country over for the right boat and finally decided on a Com-Pac 19. I found several really nice examples, but lordy! They were halfway across the world! I actually drove a few hours away to look over an 85 CP 19 II. It needed a lot of cosmetic work and had no kicker. 2 days ago, I came across a Cape Dory Typhoon weekender which is a gorgeous boat with beautiful, classic lines. It is 2 hours away and I can't wait to check it out. I did not know much about these boats before this past weekend, but all my reading indicates they sail wonderfully. I just love the classic styling in boats. The assembly line boats like Catalina, McGregor and others just don't appeal to me too much. With that said, I would still consider a nice example of a Catalina 22. A little roomier I suppose. At this point, I just pray the Cape Dory is still available to look at when I get a chance. Happy sailing!

I am a sailor too. I own ( and used to race) a Coronado 15. I have crewed on boats up to 45' and sailed to Bermuda and the Virgin Islands.
There is something that you can't put into words about how you feel when sailing. I wish you fair winds and flat water in your search. Please give and update when the right boat finds you.

I always thought of the Fireball a popsicle stick with a spinnaker. Had some fun rides on one

That's pretty much correct. Not a boat for Lake Erie.

We are (have been) long time monohull sailors. We started with a 19' Flying Dutchmen when we lived in Minnesota, converted to a 16' Fireball when we moved to Ohio and then started racing first with a Pearson 30 and then a J-35. All of these boats were bought used. We finally got tired of racing in part because the racing season cut into our time for travel.
Good luck on finding what you want. There are a lot of good boats from the 60's and 70's that are in your size range. There is also a magazine called "Practical Sailor" which is sort of the Consumer Reports for sailboats. In the past they have run a number of articles on smaller keelboats which might be of interest to you.

There's a website called Trailersailor.com that has boats for sale, a great forum, etc in case your intended "catch" gets away! Best wishes - I've been back-and-forth a few times, between monos and cats - and I just keep returning to the cats :-) Current baby is a Hobie Bravo with a self-furling mainsail - takes less than 2 minutes to be rigged and tearing across the lake!!
I still remember that moment, on my beat-up old Snark 30-some years ago, when the "how to sail" book-learning gave way to "I am one with the wind". It's a pretty special feeling!!!!

Thanks for the tips on mags and websites. I currently subscribe to Small Craft Advisor. Pretty neat magazine for small sailboats. I was a subscriber to Sail, but quickly realized those boats were WAY out of my league. LOL. I have actually never sailed or even been in a monohull (with the exception of a Starfish), but I know what I am looking for in a boat. I may get a chance to look at the Cape Dory this weekend. Here is a pic of a boat just like the one I will be checking out possibly this weekend.

Couple people in our club have Cape Dory boats and all speak very highly of them. One is very similar to the one you have your eye on. None of the owners have anything negative to say about the brand.
I had an older Rhodes 19 centerboard that was a great daysailer. Wish I still had it. Was spoiled by by Catalina 30. Miss that one too.
Good luck on your search and fair winds.
