Granted it could use a little clean up here and there but the overall design is pretty clever. Look around and you will soon find that the commercial units have weaknesses as well. I have never seen this one advetised commercially.

I don't believe you need one if the awning latch is working properly. At least I have never had need for one.

I have that exact thing and it works just fine. I use the awning rod to tighten it when traveling to keep awning from unrolling while on the road. To extend awning I use rod to loosen it. Works great for 8 years and no problem interfearing with awning to tear or damage it. I read one time that there are 2 types of Rvers:those that have had the awning unfurl while driving and those that WILL have it unfurl. I didn't want to be one of those.

You left out the third type of RV'er, those of us that have taken steps to prevent the awning from unfurling before it happens to us.

Actually it is not redneck engineering. We had one on our other MH. The loop portion is indeed where you put the awning rod to loosen and tighten it. Instead of putting a hole in your roller it clamps down on it to keep the awning from unrolling. It shouldn't touch the awning if properly used so I don't know why you are getting holes.

Thanks! Reread OP regarding the holes.
