We are in a 36ft Fleetwood Fiesta with three slides and a toad heading north up 1/101 from Malibu, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay unsure whether to continue Route 1 up the coast or Route 101, although we do want to see Hearst Castle. It seems the state parks won't take over 30 ft or slide outs. Anyone know of any State parks along our route or along 101 north to Oregon that can handle 36ft? Many thanks. Also welcome any suggestions for stops, camps etc. along the way.

I have never had any issues at the state parks not letting me in for being over 30'. Never had a problem even finding a site large enough. I wouldn't worry.

My advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

In addition to the parks already mentioned, Half Moon Bay state beach will also accommodate a rig your size. When you get further North, there are two county parks in Bodega Bay that will also suit your needs. As a side note, Pismo state beach lists a maximum site length of 36', but we stay there regularly in our 40' coach with toad.

Patricks Point, Prairie Creek, and Jedediah State Parks each have spaces for larger rigs. But not all the spaces are long. If you call and talk to a ranger, they should be able to set you up.

There seem to be a plethora of State Parks along Route 1 from Malibu to Santa Cruz and I suppose also on Route 101 but I can't tell which ones have hook ups, accept 36ft with slide outs and pets. I also would like to hear experiences of driving a 36-er with toad on Rt 1 visa-a-vis Rt 101. Many thanks for all your excellent input!!!

A couple of years ago I drove a similar route up Rte 1 and 101 most of the way from SOCAL to near Oregon Border. On your northbound leg, once you get up to the Morro Bay area, I would recommend staying on Hwy 101 until you get up to the Monterey-Salinas area, then shift back to US 1. The San Simeon-Big Sur stretch on US 1 is not really suitable for a large rig. North of San Francisco, US 1 is also pretty twisty. I would recommend Hwy 101 north until at least Santa Rosa, and then maybe cut back over to the coast. Have a great trip!

Take 1 all the way up. It's a great drive. Just turn out to let cars pass. I've done it several times in my 35'dp with a toad and it isn't a problem. The view is worth it. I'd do Hearst Castle and then spend the night someplace in that area. Then get started up Highway 1 semi early and spend all day getting to Monterey. I think it's a little over 100 miles, but you can take all daying doing it.

We are taking route 1 this fall in a 45 ft. Will that be a problem??? Are there campgrounds for a 45' around the Hearst Castle?
Thanks Ron
