Hey all, I took one of my propane tanks over to the fill station and they checked the date...found out that it is out of date...going on first trip this weekend. Im hoping I can find a place close by to get it re-certified...but am I stuck with this type of tank? I have two. Is there some bracket or conversion I can do to use normal 5 gal tanks?

That just looks like an older horizontal tank. Mine were re-certified last year at Propane Services. Call your larger propane companies and they should be able to tell you does certifications.

Looks like a pretty standard horizontal cylinder and seems to be in OK shape. Get in your phonebook and locate a propane dealer (not just a filler) who will also recertify cylinders. Take it there, get it recertified, and you're on the road for another five years (assuming visual recertification).

Up until last year most Lance's use them. They are far from old or not used any longer. You propane dealer should be able to tell you where to get it certified. A new tank is about $120.00
Do you have a BBQ? Can the tank from it fit into the compartment on your camper? Or is the place it mounts require all that stuff on the top of the tank to hold it in place?
My suggestion is take along the BBQ tank if you can use it, they sell those at Home Depot around $40 or Costco for $27. It might cost $20 to get your tank re-certified. I think they fill them with nitrogen and leak check them at some very high pressure (say 300+ PSI) or test the sidewalls for thickness with a gauge that measures the sidewalls with electronics - looks like a sona gram machine, but smaller and portable. It can tell if there is rust on the inside of the steel tank, and tell the operator the steel thickness.
Just remember IF you use another tank such as a BBQ type it has to be transported/used in the vertical position vs the horizontal position like your existing tank.
Just get yours re-certified.

Most re-fillers don't check the dates on the tanks, so as a temporary solution just take it to a different place to refill it.
Find out where your county or city does recycling and take the tank there. While there ask if they have any newer tanks and if you can have one. I've done that successfully several times. Can't beat the price. (Some were even partially full.)
