If you have seen a lot of lava flows and craters around the west then it will not be totally unique. I found it interesting for a days visit as we were in no hurry to get to our final destination. I would not hesitate to skip it if I had to make tough decisions about time and had other places I really wanted to see. I'd rate it a 6 on a 1-10 scale with 10 high.
2007 Northwoods Arctic Fox 32 5S Fifth Wheel-for sale now that we are not full-timing
2011 Keystone 23rks Hideout to poke around the smaller parks in the great Southwest

If you stay at the Craters campground during a dark moon you will witness one of the darkest nights ever and have a spectacular view of the Cosmos.
The craters is one of the few places on earth that is not light polluted from the big cities.
On your way to Idaho Falls stop at the Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 1 (EBR-I) Atomic Museum, located on U.S. Highway 20/26 between Idaho Falls and Arco. It is worth your time.
Seems a whole lot of folks (including this one) have visited Craterts of the Moon - BUT no one caught the mistake - That park is in IDAHO NOT NM.!! LOL

2X to both the great dark skies & a visit to the EBR-1. At the EBR-1 you can see a couple of nuclear engines developed for a never built bomber that was going to be capable of flying for weeks...
I highly recommend staying a night at the KOA in Arco...the family who runs the park is as nice as they could be. This was our last stop on our 2 1/2 week road trip last year and it was well worth the visit.

As a stop along the way, I think Craters of the moon is well worth visiting. I've stopped there a few times, staying in the campground in the park. During the summer, it's a little warm durning the day in the summer, and you won't have hook ups so you won't want to stay in the RV during the day, instead you'll want to check out the park. On a couple of the cinder cones you can look down and see snow year round. If you get a little warm, climb down in one of the lava tubes where there is ice year round (Bring a flashlight). Finally, as mentioned, the night should cool off nicely, and become very peaceful, and wonderfully dark. Fantastic place to lay back in the zero gravity chair and watch the stars.
