I've not stayed there, but always enjoyed the Gardens when I was stationed there in the mid 70s. A great suggestion if you stay down in the 'lowlands'. next to I-25.

Any good campgrounds around Loveland CO. We have checked out RV parks and reviews and they aren't all that great. Also looking for things to see and do besides Estes Park. We are also visity the Colorado Springs area and have a site booked for our time there. Looking into the Royal Gorge train and the bridge for a visit, what else can anyone suggest. We are coming from a rally in Gillette WY and are spending the next week in those areas for my first trip to Colorado. In reading earlier posts we will try to make our next trip back to Colorado the area around Durango.

Loveland/Estes park is overpriced and overpopulated. IMHO as a native (who lives just down the road).
The front range (I-25 corridor) is just another big city with a mountain backdrop.
By far the best part of Colorado is the SW (telluride, Oaray, Ridgway, etc). but that's a good 8 hour drive from here.
You could go to Steamboat Springs from Gillete. maybe another 2 hours, but some PRETTY country and then work your way back via North Park (walden) or come up thru Breckenridge area.
Even Colorado City (south of Peublo) and into the Wet Mtns is quite pretty.

The Gorge is just above Canyon City, created by the Arkansas River. Downstream from Salida, don't remember how far but it's a ways. There are several CGs on the Ark. Most will handle your rig, I think.
The Arkansas River Headwaters are at Leadville. FYI
If I remember correctly there is a CG at Texas Creek?, upstream a few miles further. Hiway 50 follows the Ark, up from Canyon city, above Salida 285 follows it for a ways, then 24? from Johnson's Village to Leadville. But the Gorge is down on the SH Co 50 stretch. A good 2 lane Blacktop road.
KOA Canyon City
Cotopaxi KOA This one is above the Gorge.

I'm no help on the Loveland area.
I take it the Jeep is going to be 'with'. If so, and you want to keep the Coach at the lower elevations, either of the 2 CG links I posted are a good base to operate from to come 'up the hill', with the Jeep. Although the pull up to the river isn't bad, just a bit 'snaky'. No passes, just up the river. You can go al the way to Leadville without touching a Pass at all, it follows the river valley.
Plenty of Off Roading, hiking, fishing, to do in the area. The snow pack is low this year, so fishing is good, white water rafting season may be a bit tamer than usual. Brown's Canyon is between Nathrop and Salida, rafting wise. Fishing is readily available on the Ark as well, since the road follows the river. Hot springs on Mt Princeton road, and in Buena Vista.
For distance scale do a Trip planner on Mapquest or Google Maps, from Canyon City to Leadville.
This CG is in Nathorp,,, about halfway up to Leadville, IF you should decide to come on up the hill some.
Chalk Creek CG

If you are over in the southwestern Colorado there is an awesome campgrounds called Priest Gulch just north of Delores and north of Stoner, Co. It sets right on the Delores River and it is very beautiful there and quiet. The place is surrounded by mountains and you can take you tow to Teleuride which is an awesome place to visit. The mountain views are awesome! If you happen to be into trout fishing there is some excellent trout streams all throughout the area and trout lake is right up the road on the way to Telluride. Lots of other neat places to visit all around the area and staying at Priest Gulch is a great central location. They are also big rig friendly and dog friendly as well. Good Luck and Happy RVing!

I can't belive nobody said to stay at Dakota Ridge in Golden!
Its the nicest campground in Colorado, easy to get into right on the main highway, I have stayed there a dozen times.
You won't be disapointed.
