Have a local welding shop weld a couple tabs on the hitch and handle....

I thought about that option, as did the dealer, but didn't know if I modified the hitch that it wouldn't void the warranty, if it ever came into question
I would mod the hitch and use it. If it gave a problem that needed warranty service, which I couldn't fix myself, I'd cut off the tabs, grind the welded areas flat, and paint it, then turn it in for warranty....

There is no provision to lock the handle on my 25k Pullrite. 3 mules & a supermodel could not unlatch the thing without dropping the legs.

I purchased and had installed,a Curt 16116 (16K)5th wheel hitch yesterday. When I got it home I noticed that there was no safety lock on the release handle. I contacted the dealer and he called the factory rep. Curt has removed the safety tabs on the release handle because of performance problems with the head under certain conditions. They offer no solution at this time for this design problem, other than to upgrade to their 20K model. Which has a price tag of $400.00 more. Has anyone performed a MOD on their 16K Curt that would rectify this problem? If not,the only other solutions, upgrade to 20K or purchase another brand.

I sent you a PM. Please let me know what you think.

There is a safety lock/hasp on the release handle of other hitches such as Reese. This prevents someone from walking by your rig, pulling the handle then hiding in the bushes to watch you pull away and drop your rig on the bed walls.

Thanks to everyone for their replys. I believe the problem has been solved and all thanks to the forum.
I took the 16K back to the dealer as recommended by B.O.Plenty and Artemus Gordon. I have been made an offer on a slightly used, less than 1 year old Curt Q20 and go to tomorrow to look at it. It may be heavier than needed, but who knows the next fiver may be bigger

I have a Q20 that I like very very well. The only problem I have had is at 20 deg. the jaws would not close completely enough for the handle to go in far enough to lock. Had to pry the jaw down with long screwdriver.
I have about 30,000 miles on it.

When it get into the 20's here, I plan on having the fiver in storage, the hitch in the garage, and I will be waiting a couple of days for the temps to get back in the 50's or 60's.
