Well, I was thinking about changing my Transynd and filters myself, but just didn't want to screw up a $10K transmission so had the local Allison shop do it....SO glad I did! Especially when I saw the mechanic get a hot oil shampoo and facial when the filter splashed into the pan of hot Transynd!!! Amazingly the labor to do the change was $50....I would have spent that just on the needed equipment/pump to do it myself

Not hard to change. It is a simple screw on filter. Changed mine several times when I had a class A.

The Allison 3000 series does not have a screw on filter, they have two internal filters secured with bolts. Still not a hard job, just a little intimidating the first time.

Just double check the torque placed on the bolts....some shops have been known to strip out the threads in the aluminum housing.

CAUTION:::: Be sure the correct instructions are followed to service the correct Allison Transmission Model in the correct vehicle. Since 1971 Allison has tried many changes to correct problems the cheapest way with the least ex-poser to warranty claims by denial of problems. The result is a real hodgepodge for service personal to work with.

Hey Larry,
I serviced mine last, and you're right, it isn't all that expensive in labor to have it done. Problem is, I always had to correct the level when they did it, so I did mine myself last time. With Transynd, it isn't that often now. I did my second change at 143,000. Is All Trans on Wolf Ridge still in business? Mainly the reason I did mine last, is because they didn't have a service man to do the labor. I purchased the fluid and filters from them and did it myself.
Have you retired or still working?

No problem...this is an Allison dealer....they have about 100 Allison transmissions lying all over the place....I'm not their first rodeo!!! So $50 for them to do all that nasty stuff is a big bargain....

Like others already mentioned, its not a hard job but may be a little intimidating at first. Two very important steps to ensure a trouble free service are one, make sure to use the correct gaskets. If yours had o-rings then make sure you put o-rings back on the flange/cover. If it has gaskets, same thing. The filter kits will come with both sytles. There are also to different lenght of filters, make sure you use the correct one. They are determined by the sump depth.

Second, make sure to torque the fasteners to the proper torque value on the filter covers. These are fairly easy to strip out if not paying attention. I have had to repair the threads in one of a friend after a botched service from a local dealer. Which leads me to my point of why I do my own service/repairs. No one else will perform the repairs the way I want them done and to the same degree of attention.

If the dealer spilled oil all over the place, my guess would be they are not very familiar with performing this task. You really shouldn't spill much with the correct catch pans. It is actually one of the easier transmissions to service as the drains and filter covers are right on the bottom so fluid doesn't need to run down the side to drain.

Mike.

I didn't say that.....the HOT filter dropped into the pan in such a way as to nail him with oil splashed on him....NO spills at all....these guys knew how to do it
