I have bought 3 new vehicles from my dealer, all where at a different dealer. One was in Arlington Tx., my dealer is in Springfield Mo. My truck, 2010 Ram, was in Tx., they didn't charge me anything to go get. Plus the relationship with your local dealer, has proven to me, to be priceless when you are in need!

Of COURSE your dealer will make some money on the sale and why would you expect otherwise? They make money if they sell you something from their own lot and this is a LOT more trouble for them. If you can get the truck for a better price from the OTHER dealer then go get it yourself but chances are you'll get about the same deal from either dealer.

Mixed opinions, but it DOES seem like if you really want to pinch pennies, it'd be safest to go to the dealer with the vehicle in his possession, as long as it's not THAT far away.

Thanks everyone.

I get supplier plan so price of new GM is set right on dealer invoice. The only thing to negotiate is possible trade. Never paid anything more for a dealer swap but the farthest the dealer had to swap was 200 miles. They pay the retired swap drivers min wage as I know 2 drivers. Randu

When shopping for my '05, I contacted my credit union, who happened to mention that they worked with a "finder", who located vehicles for CU members. I gave the finder my specs, he found the vehicle out of state, had it transported to his local dealer, had it prepped, then he delivered it to my rural Indiana home, I signed the CU paperwork that he brought with him...never had to leave the farm....sweet way to buy.

Whenever we've purchased a vehicle, they rarely have the color or options we wanted on their lot. So they would hunt one up online and go get it for us. They charged only an small extra delivery fee.

"All dealers pay the same amount for the vehicles from the manufacturer."

Well yes and no. There are factory to dealer incentives as well as hold backs.

A dealer that sells more cars is in a much better position to give you a better price. This is why you go to a dealer to buy a certain truck. Dealer "A" says this is your price. You go to dealer "B" and the price can be several hundred less. Dealer "B" sells more cars and will give you a lesser price.

Most dealers run their overhead very lean these days, so don't bring that up.

Most dealers buy and trade vehicles with each other at invoice. At some point everyone needs a vehicle another deal has.

All dealers pay the same amount for the vehicles from the manufacturer. The only additional cost is transferring the vehicle. Some dealers use a truck and trailer for the transfer and others send A driver.

My Nephew is a GMC dealer. He says it all depends. Some dealers will do a dealer trade invoice for invoice. If it is a short supply vehicle, the dealer with the desirable vehicle will almost always want a few hundred extra to give up the "in demand" vehicle.

In the Northwest- there is a dealer in Northern Idaho called Dave Smith's sells most brands- claims to be one of the largest in the states in volume- they will actually buy you a 1 way airfare to spokane and come and get you. I have heard folks come from Alaska to Texas to get them...
