I have long asserted that traveling by RV and staying in RV parks was about the same cost as traveling by car and staying in hotels/motels.

We are about to take off on a 2 week trip from Dallas to Utah, Arizona, and back. Out of curiosity, I ran the numbers.

For THIS trip, it will cost about $90 MORE to take the RV over driving a car. Using these parameters, a trip of 2278 miles was the break even point.

I tried to post the spread sheet, but it just wouldn't format properly.

If RV'ing was just about the money, a lot fewer of us would be doing it.

I use my trailer because that is the way I like to travel.
I don't believe that, for most of us, economy is the prime incentive for RVing

The cost for us depends on so many factors. We prefer our own bed and to be able to prepare food without eating in restaurants or fast food. We save money by looking for lower priced campgrounds and using Passport America half price camping. For us the choice is easy if the price is about the same. We prefer our RV.

We will look at both options when we TRAVEL. Lodging, meals and the like. But this scenario must not be confused with campin', IMHO.

Add in the cost of the RV and TV, maintenance, insureance, etc, and there is no way it is less expensive than motel-hotel.

When I consider this argument, I ask myself if it would be better to leave the RV in the driveway instead of using it.

Regardless of cost I use my trailer because I want to sleep in a bed and use a bathroom that I know the history of. What was done by who.
