in all of our calculations towing the 5th has always been cheaper then taking the truck and staying in hotels.
our last road trip to the east coast cost us a total of $3200.00 in fuel and camping fees.
We were on the road for 22 nights @ $100.00 per night = $2200.00
as we are staying in hotels we would need to eat restaurant food at likley 100 dollars per day for 3 of us another $2200.00 - $400 for groceries that we bought instead is $1800.00
so, hotels, 2200+1800+1500 = $5500.00
towing, 3200.00+400 = $3600.00
air fair for 3 of us would have been $3200.00 at the time we were on the road last year....as the road is the holiday for us flying was out of the question.
fuel for the truck alone without the 5th would have been about $1500.00

next time your in a hotel and you see the room service ladies... take a look at what is on the carts...take note of what is not on the carts..I have never seen bed spreads on the carts...
We travel with six and would need two hotel rooms (or a family suite), plus driving our conversion van, and don't forget 3 meals a day for each of us. In our case, there's no doubt we save $$$ taking the RV instead of dragging all our stuff in and out of hotels. We even save $$$ when just the DW and I travel in our RV and we enjoy it so much more. I travel extensively for business and accumulate dozens of free hotel nights annually that I rarely use since we prefer using our rig so much. I use the free nights for when out of town guests are visiting us. Not everyone is cut-out for RVing, it's your rig, and your choice to use it or lose (sell) it.
When you drive your car you have a suitcase with your belongings in the trunk and you have to carry it to the motel/hotel using a bed you never slept in before VS your trailer where all your belongings are organized and you use your own bed.
And what about the fun,the life style and meeting new friends at the C.G,I do not see any one knocking on the door at the motel just to meet new people ....
If you like your RV life style it will coast you BUT you will do what you want and like.

Your math and my math don't add up the same. I guess it does make a difference as to what kind of campgounds you stay or RV resorts. IF you need full hookups all the time and need to be entertained. We don't to both of those. I know going by RV is cheaper for us. We also boomdock a lot, don't like feeling like a sardine. I like sleeping in my own bed and I don't have to worry about bedbugs.

That's pretty much true. However, there are other reasons to camp vs. hotel.
I don't care if it is cheaper to sleep in my RV. I know who slept in my RV bed last night. Some motels and hotels are very clean. Some are not. I like sleeping all night and taking a shower in my own dirt.
