My question would be, do you feel comfortable? Safe? If so I would stay in the parking lot if it was legal. I am retired law enforcement. I would stay there. I would stay most places. I would feel comfortable. If somebody banged on your door in the middle of the night would you still feel comfortable? Would you have specific procedures that you would follow if that happened? I guess what I am saying is, don't bang on my door at night in a Walmart parking lot unless you are in uniform or have a visible Walmart I.D. badge. Nuff said.

When I do stay in a Walmart parking lot it usually is because I have made several purchases at that Walmart. Most likely food and RV supplies. They understand that and usually don't bother you. If it is posted no over night camping I don't stay. I might add those signs are not because of Walmart. The local RV parks force them on Walmart. The thing that irritates me is when all the RV parks are filled the signs are still there.

All these comments about "camping" at WalMart. I have reread the OP's question and he clearly says nothing about "camping", only "overnighting".

I never "camp" at either WalMart or Cracker Barrel. I only "overnight". I ask the shift supervisor or security about their policy. I have never been turned away from either unless municipal ordinances prohibit. I, too, am still a working man. I leave late on Friday afternoon and drive until I am tired. I do not need camping facilities...only parking space. I see no harm in staying at places like WalMart or Cracker Barrel when it is permissible by them.

Regards

We have stayed at Walmarts many times and expect to do so again. I don't feel the need to justify it to anyone; it's just what we choose to do.

We stop at Wally parks now and then and always ask the manager. I also make sure we do some shopping to show our appreciation.

When I was an over the road truck driver I spent many nights in a Walmart parking lot. Now that I am retired we still spend overnight in a Walmart. I have never had any problems. I am still waiting to see Supreme Court Justice Thomas in one. He and his wife stay in them when traveling too.

We stayed at one on our way down in FL. It was right across the VA/NC boarder in NC. There were already 4 or so campers in the back lot area. Had no problems except for some car noises. We stopped at one in VA on the way back and there was a sign about no overnight parking. I was dead tired and went in to ask. The nice security guard said it was okay as long as we left before 5-6am because the next shift came on and they may have had a problem.

We do not do it,personal choice, but appreciate the opportunity to do so if needed. We hope that uncaring Rv'ers do not take that opportunity away from us.

We overnight at Wally World regularly when traveling. Also Flying J's.

We used to ask in Walmart if it was OK but nobody ever knew - even the manager. So if there's no signs saying no overnight parking, we do. Never been asked to leave.

Also, my observation is that a Walmart in a shopping plaza (as opposed to stand-alone) is much more likely to have no overnight parking signs.

I've heard of one case where someone had some vandalism parking at a crowded truck stop.

I have overnighted at WM some. Usually not a good night's sleep with the car without a muffler making a beer run at 2am, the street sweeper cleaning the lot about 3am, and the semi parking and idling next to me about 4 while he waited for the garden shop to open in the morning.
