Thanks
When you ask if it's ok also ask where they would like for you to park. I always park where the manager tells me to. By the way it's not camping it's over night parking.

If you are coming Northbound on 81 through Cortland there is a Visitor's Center at exit 60 and parking is allowed. However at exit 51 and you can spend the time, Fillmore Glen State Park is beautiful and a great place to spend the night for 20 bucks or so, maybe less if you don't need elec. Google "route 81 NYS rest areas" or go to www.upstatenyroads.com for more information.

I've brought this up many times; check the local ordinance. In Upland Calif, the police will write you a nice ticket for overnight camping at Walmart. The local Walmart doesn't care what you do, but the local police does. Check with Walmart's manager and check the local ordinance.

X2 never had any problems. Don't put out the slides or lawn chairs, loud music etc... there is a etiquette that should be followed. This way there is no damage to all RV'ers reputations and free parking will be preserved.

I don't know anything about the situation up there. The cost of diesel that's required to travel all the way up there is simply too much for me.
I'm getting sleepy now, plus I don't tell anyone what to do. All I know is that there's plenty of RV-friendly Walmarts in the southern half of the USA.
BTW I save money however I can so that I can spend some however I want. I've always been that way.

We live close to that area - 20+ miles and don't have any info whether Walmart allows overnighting. I suspect you would be OK. The area the store islocated is also OK but a bit away from I-81 - cross town. If northbound, as mentioned, the NY Welcome Center may be more convenient although it is about a 1/2 hr south of Cortland. If southbound, there is a rest area near Whitney Point. Not much else that stretch of road.
We overnight at Walmart in MD (exit 6) on many trips south - never had a problem there. We also have stayed at Flying J and similar truck stops when we need a shorter rest stop with late arrival/early departure plans. There rest you get, unless you are a heavy sleeper (I am), will not be as good - typically a fair amount of noise, although we have been at some campgrounds louder than Walmart. Best bet is to call the store and ask a manager. Good luck, Mike

It isn't people don't want/can't understand and accept, it is they need to feel superior in some way calling others cheap or poor planners or anything else.

Thanks Ahhh, Cortland. I actually stopped at a campground there last spring. It was the farthest north campground that had RV dumps open early April. Arrived home the next day with empty tanks - worth the $$ that time.

Overnighting in a lot has nothing to do with the cost. It is time management. It is a huge waste of my time to check into a campground, especially if I have to do it after their office hours are closed, setup everything, break down and check out in the AM. Yes, I plan my overnight stops in advance, based on how far I need to go to my recreational destination, how far I can drive in a long day, and how many days it will take me to get there. I guess if you are retired you can just wander around, driving short days, and taking leisurely afternoons and nights at a resort campground, without a care for how long a trip takes. Those of us working with limited weekends and vacation time don't have that luxury.
