Hey all,
We bought a 26 ft keystone 5th wheel in feb in hopes to use it like crazy. Well we used it last weekend and quickly realized that it is just too damn big for us. Plus we can not get into our remote camping spots. We are not "RV" people (no offense) and our idea of camping is not parking on a cement slab while looking right at your neighbors. If we stick with the 5ver i feel like that is what we will be reduced to. So i started looking into truck campers. Pretty neat setups that will still allow usto boondock seemingly like we like to do. Our last rig was a syncro westfalia that would literally go anywhere, but no creature comforts for the wife. That is what prompted us to buy the 5ver, which is a great rig, but limits our options. Looked at a 2012 Lance 1050s today. Wow! We have a 2001 dodge diesel 2500 that will be up for the task. Any inputs on this setup or other options to look at? Will we still have difficulty in getting remote with this setup? Overhead clearance may be an issue. Also, can we expect similar or better mpg then with the 5ver? Sorry for all the questions!
Thanks
Jason

Dry weight according to Lance is right at 3000#. What is the payload capacity of your 2001 Dodge CD 2500hd? That's a fair size camper and will challenge you going offroad.

I just sold my 40' 5er for the same reason. Couldn't stop where you wanted. Couldn't go off the beaten path. I have an 1191 on order but found an Arctic Fox 1150 here that I just might get instead.

According to the sticker on the door pillar its over 6000#. So should be more then enough. My concern would be if i need airbags or not. My rear has been raised about 4 inches

Here's a chart that lists both PAYLOAD and AXLE Capacity. Wouldn't want you to get in a bind.

Hmmm, looks like my payload will probably be maxed once you add passengers, fuel and gear. What is rear axle capacity rating? Thats what i was looking at when i got over 6000#s

THIS CHART
Scroll down to the Tow/Load ratings. Best case scenario is a Reg-Cab, Long-Bed with 2600 pound payload. You're going to be pushing past the limits with that Lance, and probably not be too happy.
TV: 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext cab 4x4 5.3 V8. GoodYear Wrangler Authority E-Rated tires, FireStone AirBags.
