Just added a Scan Gauge so am now able to monitor trany fluid temps. Saw 204 (highest yet), once today on a 6 mile 6% grade, cruising between 55 and 60, air temp was 95. It came right down once we topped out the grade. Usually runs under 175 but that was one hell of a hill.

Just some FYI and not totally relative.

My "weak" 48RE with 165,000 miles on it at the time went from MD to TX taking the northern route through PA, OH, IN MO, AR, and into TX last summer towing 21K combined. I had my Smarty JR. on the 40hp tune and the A/C was on the whole trip. I now have 179,000 miles on my tranny and it still performs like the day I bought the truck over seven years ago.

I snapped this pic of my gauges about an hour out of TX going south on US30 with outside temps reaching 106°F. I had the cruise set at 65mph with the OD on. My tranny temp reading comes from the tranny out line to coolers which is the most real temp you can get. Pan temps would have been lower than the reading you see on the gauge.

I haven't towed with the Trans temp reading ability programmed into my Scanguage2 yet, but empty, it reads about 165* - 175*. I don't know where it's getting the reading from, but it's wherever the PCM/ECM gets it from.

Ahhh that's going south, all down hill
Sorry about the hijack OP, but do you see lower EGT's with the tuner like Madd claims? I need to tap that in this summer.

Haha, true when you look at a map.

In reality the elevation of the airport in Texarkana is 128ft higher than the airport in Little Rock.

This has come up several times for the 6speed GM with the Dexron VI fluid. Here is an answer one member got from GM.

I was also concerned at one pointhowever and contacted GM with the question. There answer was: Good Morning! Thank you for giving me the time to do some research on your concern with the transmission temperature. I have consulted one of our dealers and am happy to inform you that I have the information you’ve requested. The normal operating temperature is between 160°F to 200°F (71°C to 93°C). For towing, the normal operating temperature is between 235°F (113°C) to 260°F (127°C).
