Can you guys/gals post up pics of your stay, and specifically sites and the numbers of them? I have checked out some of the other forums that have been listed here about Disney but its all just so overwhelming. We are trying to plan a trip for the fall of 2013 and need to decide what part of the park to stay in and what sites we should check out.
At Fort Wilderness, you cannot request a specific site or even a specific loop. When you make your reservation, it is for the type of site you want, Partial hookups, Full hookups, Preferred and Premium sites. Virtually all sites are good, each loop will have its advantages. Some are closer to the Outpost Settlement, beach boats and restaurants, some are closer to the pools. The 2000 loop (partial hookup) is the only one (IMHO) that is not very close to anything but nature. You will enjoy FW regardless of what loop you are assigned to.

thanks for the replies. I think one of my biggest concerns was not having shade. I like the feel of wooded sites, not to mention I dont want to bake inthe Florida sun camped out in the middle of a field.

The above information is incorrect.
You can most definitely request a certain loop when you make your reservation and 5-days prior to your arrival you can fax your request for a specific site or location within your requested loop. They are very good at honoring requests for a site but make sure you put your most important item in your request first; such as near comfort station, or bus stop, or easy to back in, etc. If you know a specific site you like, put that as your preference along with second and third choices. I have been going to FW several times a year and have had very good luck at getting my requested site. www.disboards.com is an excellent site for all information about Fort Wilderness and Disney. They even have a subsection specifically for campers. Check it out!!
Tent, Full Hook-up, Preferred and Premium. With some being "Pet Friendly" too.
There isn't a bad loop to be on. They are mostly well shaded, with a few unshaded sites near the lake edge. All accessible to bus stops, heated/air conditioned bath house w/ laundry room, vending for drinks and ice. Doggie bags situated on posts around the pet friendly loops.
We've stayed in a bunch of the loops... My favorite was a site that had a mature tangerine tree in the site covered with tangerines...but, it was a tent loop...and now we have a 5th wheel.
It's mainly a matter of how far you bike, bus, walk, golf cart, etc... to the Boat Dock, Settlement, Outpost, Trading Post, Swimming Pool, Bike Barn, Horseback riding, Animal Petting Zoo, Nature Trails, Bike Trails, Lakeside viewing of fireworks, fishing, canoeing/kayaking rentals, Horse Drawn Carriage Rides, Hoop-Dee-Doo Review, Tavern, Backyard Bar-b-que, Camp Fire Sing-a-long w/ Chip & Dale followed by a movie.
We bring our bikes... golf cart rentals are popular as well. Use your first trip to just take in the sights/sites. Go "Looping" (riding around the individual loops to get a sense of each ones views and layout). Then you'll be better armed to decide if you want a FHU, Preferred, Premium site on your next visit. If you come around Halloween or Christmas...many of the campers decorate their sites in all out fashion.
Honestly-pick out the grade of site you want-and pet or not-and take what they give you and check it out from there...
Disney is pretty good at accomodating requests-and usually will let you move after you're in(if they're not packed!)
What some campers love about the Fort-others despise!
One thing I've heard is this-'the best site we ever had at Fort Wilderness was the one we had last year!) This quote pretty much sums up a great vacation and what our experiences have been! Don't get me wrong-we have our favorite-but have been 'forced' onto a few because of availablity-and my favorite loop is my favorite loop because we couldn't get onto out old favorite!!!

Don't worry about having shade. Except for about 12-15 new sites in the 600 loop(premium level), all of the sites are in the woods and very shady.
We request a specific loop all the time and even a specific site. While we don't always get the site we request, we do get the loop. As stated, there really is not a bad site in the place. Yes, some are a little better than others but none of them are bad. Take some time to enjoy the Fort and don't get so caught up in spending every waking moment in the parks. In my opinion, there is no better place to stay when going to WDW. We will be there over Mother's Day weekend for 5 days and than again over July 4th.

Most sites are wooded so I would not worry about the shade concern. To me it is really all about the same. We take our bikes to get around and use the bus also. Another thing we found it we are at the parks a lot and not too much at the camper so it really does not bother us to much about the site or site location.
I think we will probably do a couple days at the park and the rest will be spent in the campground just relaxing. I hate to run nonstop while on vacation. Thats one of my favorite things about camping on the weekends. We get there on Friday and dont leave the campground until Sunday afternoon.
