What am I missing? What keeps it from tipping over if you step off the center?

As you may recall I was looking at purchasing portable steps to make the getting in and out easier on Joyce's knees. Stanley on the Escapee forum came up with this idea. I used a scrap piece of wood I had. A tiny scissor jack I got for free from the dealer who sold me my truck and four screws from the hardware store. Total cost 84ยข.

I guess I'm missing something on how this helps someones knees.

The knee thing is the wobble that the steps used to have in them. The board that is mounted on top of the jack keeps it stable. It fits between the handle used to pull the step out and the edge of the step so it doesn't have any real room to move back and forth.

Awww, ya' place it under the bottom step. Its not a separate step.

You don't attach the jack to the steps, just place it under the step when parked, crank it up to steady the step.

If you were to use 4 lag bolts through the ends of the step into the 2X10(?), would there still be enough clearance left to keep the jack/wood attached to the step while driving and then just use a drill with proper socket to quickly deploy and retract?

Could also add vertical carriage bolts with nylock nuts at ends of step to provide redundant attachment.

Excellent job!
