It really all depends on what you are looking for and if you want to stay in one place or move around a bit. We've been going for the last 7 years and yes you can find camps for $600 a month and you can also find "resorts" for $900+ per month. We prefer to spend a month or so in St. Augustine which is less expensive. We then move to the signature resort in Naples and that is a lot more pricey, head to the keys again pricey. Fuel round trip costs about $1,700, $500-600 per month for food (some cooking, some going out) and another $250-500 per month for entertainment. All in all I spend on average about $5-7K for a 3 month trip to florida in the RV.

The high end was the trip where we stayed at Blue Water Key for 10 days, Fort Wilderness for a week, Naples for 2 weeks and St. Augustine for 6 weeks. It's all a matter of personal preference. We met a couple who go to the same camp in Miami (miami everglades resort, very very nice place but cheap.) and they do the entire vacation for under $5K for 14 weeks.

Remember,"you get what you pay for". Florida cost more than Texas, but it is worth a whole lot more. The further south you go,the warmer it gets. Tampa is absolutly the northern limit. Punta Gorda is on the sub tropic line, and starts the really good weather. You will never run out of things to do in Florida. Stay close to the water, otherwise why go to Florida. Riverside RV is a great place to winter, near Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda,Arcadia mailing adress. We loved it so much we bought a manufactured home near by. By staying four months, you have a better chance to find a good park to stay at. At most of the good parks it is hard to find a shorter reservation.

We are at Orchid Lake RV Resort in New Port Richey, FL. Rate for 6 mo.
is $475.00/mo. plus electric (.l0 kwh) and cable--brighthouse--$65.00.
Well organized, many activities, very clean, quiet with no major highways
real close, and the best--don't have to put up with barking dogs--only
pets allowed are inside cats and birds. No visitor dogs either! Have
already made reservation for our stay beginning in Nov. 2012

Get the Book of SP Campgrounds and start trying to make reservations - NOW!! It is amazing how fast it fills up. We used to live in VA, left mid-October and returned late May....moving from SP to SP...down one coast and up the other - it was great. The wife went on line and made the reservations. Likeed it so much we now live there, ha! Safe travels.

Others have pretty much covered costs down here in Florida. You also asked about travel time. That really all depends on how many miles you like to travel in a day. We have travelled back and forth between Lakeland, FL and Middletown, NJ more times than I can count. We usually take our time and take 3 days. This summer we were in a hurry though, and easily made it in two days. As I said, it all depends on how many hours you want to drive, and how fast you drive!!!!

We volunteer at a Fl state park in mid-Fl for Dec thru Mar. Have to work 20 hrs a week per unit (varies for different parks) and we receive full hookups. It gives us something to do during the winter instead of just sitting around. We usually work 30 hrs each (wife & I) per week because we enjoy this park.

You need to do your research, they are so many camp grounds and a lot of diffrent prices depending on where you weant to go. I take 500.00 a month out of my IRA and put into a money market account I have got to take it out any way due to my age, that is what I use every year for my trips some times I use more sometimes I use less but never have I went over the yearly amount, a lot of times I have enough left over to do yearly Maint. on my unit, plus minor repairs. Summer time is here so every one drive safe and enjoy.

We are in Zephyrhills, FL. The weather this winter couldn't have been better. We are at Emerald Pointe RV Resort which is a privately owned facility. You rent from the owners that have lot's available.
Rent for us $450/month
Electric $ 80/month avg.
Fuel round trip $1600
Everyone has different monthly expenditures so I don't think that's a factor. What you spend at home is what you'll probably spend here.
I should mention avg rent is $550/month but the longer you stay gains you some bargaining power for a lesser rate. Hope this helps. If you should visit the website believe me that the pictures you see are everything the park is. It's beautiful. Plenty to do in the area as well as the park. Plenty of bikers (two wheel and trikes) and car enthusiasts as well. Check it out.
