Per analysis of the engine oil (by Blackstone Labs, and if you doubt their competence, there is no hope for you), the K&N's work just fine.
...a stupid movie and you don't even know me....oh well, some just believe what they want to believe, others do the research, study and learn.....Don't understand the Whack stuff unless your just one of those cyber Bullies that likes to poke fun at those who don't believe the way you do...so you get ugly with others over it.
No hope for me???? In what aspect...again, you don't know me...in job security??? don't think so...My salvation???? Don't think so, My marriage???? 42 years and counting...don't think so...Where is there no hope for me?? In knowing that a K&N filter is bad for a newer diesel and you disagree...wow...that is some earth shattering reality....and no hope for me because of that....wow....wished life was just that simple....have a nice day,,I really, truly don't care what you do with any of your engines...I even stated so in last post...but if you feel like you need to bully a little more, sounds like your good at it, so go ahead and have fun.....

okay, back on track.....Why would it matter if it was a new or older gas or diesel engine?...., dirt(or silicone as it shows up on an oil analysis) is bad for any engine. Gas, diesel, turbo, supercharged, or normally aspirated. At least for me the K & N works just fine, and has for life of my truck, 12 years and almost 100,000 miles. On top of that, I am running extra fueling and 30% more boost than stock, and still no dirt in the oil. It works for me and will work just fine for others.....

I don't know what it is that brings out the K&N Police. Can't think of another product that a few folks feel so motivated to disparage them with such venom. Tuners, Chips, after market exhausts etc., get the same treatment by a few but why all of the vitriol? If you don 't believe in their product that's OK, like the man said "Opinions Vary." One poster responded to a positive comment with the the snide response "Well that's one." The truth is K&N has sold over 30,000,000 of their filters over the last 40 years. I have yet to hear of a single engine failure or lawsuit against K&N. They are just one (albeit the best known), of many companies producing after market filters and intakes.
Over the last 3.5 years I have recouped the price of the the system and will continue to never have to buy another air filter. I clean mine excessively, about twice a year, but then I live in the high Sonoran desert of Arizona where dusty conditions are the norm. The Dyno shows a net gain of 16 HP and I don't care if you believe it or not. After all those pesky Dyno's are just blue smoke and mirrors....right?
I have posted this before but will repeat one more time....my K&N CAI flows more air not because it filters less but because they have eliminated most of the twists, turns and other restrictions that come with a stock intake system. I humbly submit "Exhibit A" from my 06 5.4L.
This what came off of my F-150:
This is the K&N CAI that replaced it:
Honestly folks, which one is going to be more efficient? If you want to hate K&N and all of the 30 million fools who run them feel free, frankly Scarlet.... So flame away folks, this thread is soon to die one way or the other. I promised myself I would not post again but what the hell, I lied. Run what you like, believe who want but try, try to be nice about it.

Don't take this as argumentative, but I just want to add that at the same time I found dirt upstream of my K&N air filter, my oil analysis was normal to low for silicon (dirt).
I can only assume the oil filter caught it? I don't really know. To each their own with K&N, you paid for the truck, and the filter that goes on it, and it's your choice what to run . I just share my experience, and others can take it FWIW.

Come on ib, you know your wrong, just as I am....I've been called the weight police, now it's the K&N police....gotta love the name calling when people disagree with others.....my experience was the same as yours, but what do we know, maybe we just think it happened
Jarlaxle wrote: Who do I believe...actual DATA from Blackstone Labs or BS from someone with an ax to grind? Gee, that's an easy one.
No axe to grind, this post asked for opinions and it got them...just like being asked which to use, GN or 5er hitch....a 3/4 ton instead of a 1 ton to tow with...lot's of questions asked and opinions given....some like the K& N air filters and some don't...there is evidence on both sides, not just from Blackstone Labs, but other labs that are as reputable....just because some don't agree with you doesn't mean one has to resort to name calling and calling other peoples post, "BS:.....
no axe to grind....I used K&N cold air intake on an 03 D/A and an 01 8.1....and both had problems....no lie, just fact...just like yours...I never accused you of having an axe to grind or saying you were spouting "BS"....it was you and several others that have been so offended by others post that you've resorted to name calling and telling us we have an axe to grind and don't know what we're talking about....
really doesn't matter....but the OP DID ask for opinions on the K&N and got them, I never stated anyone spouted BS, or had an agenda or resorted to name calling as some of you have...
One will do and use whatever one wants to do or use and no one can make that decision for them...people can do what they want to do...it's called, "free will".....without the name calling or cutting on others post.....if we don't agree, you presented your facts, we gave ours...nothing more, nothing less.....It's your/their truck/car, they can do with it what ever they want no matter what anyone say's... I'd just try to be civil about it and stop the name calling and stop calling others post "BS" just because we don't agree on the topic...
"axe to grind" not hardly...if only life were that simple that all one had to make a life decision on was whether or not to use a K&N filter....if only that was all one had to worry about..........
I've had mine in the truck since 2001 with 63,000 on the truck. It's now 2012 and the truck has 233,000 miles on it and the same K&N filter.. I've cleaned it per the instructions and still have the paper filter it came with to use for the day or so between cleanings.. All I know is when it has the paper filter in, it needs to downshift into 2nd gear going up the steep hill in my neighborhood. With the K&N, it'll hold 3rd.
I know that's about as scientific as any opinion out there, but just what I notice when I actually clean the thing.. I'm not anywhere near a "dusty use" condition, so I don't have to clean it that often (pretty much the 50,000 mile recommendation in the instructions).
No MAF issues, I've done the 'white glove' test on the intake after the filter and can't see any noticeable 'dust'.. I've not done any kind of oil analysis, but just change my oil about every 5-6,000 miles like everyone else.
Is it harming my engine any? Dunno, don't care.. All I know is I've been using it for 11 years and some 170,000 miles and my engine has not imploded on itself..
Looking forward to yet another great camping season with the F150 and the Prowler, so happy trails!

Why all this talk about oil analysis? The air that is supposed to be filtered goes in the intake, on top of the piston and out the exhaust. Only a very small amount of blow by gasses gets past the rings. Even the PCV system doesn't move all that much air through it.
They do not filter as well as OEM paper, but some OEM designs are very restrictive. Luckily both my vehicles have stock filters that can handle significant motor power upgrades before becoming an issue.
A lot of the reported MAF issues aren't from dirt; they are from incorrect oiling. Too much oil and it gets on the sensor.
