Yep that is a major drawback and I would say "almost none" allow that breed vs. "Not many". Put him in a kennel if you can find one that will take that breed.

We bought our tow vehicle knowing that our 2 70lbs dogs would be going with us frequenlty. Put the dog in the bed of the truck? Put the dog in the 5th wheel? Where do you want to be? Maybe its not the breed, maybe it really is the owners!!

I agree with your wife. The dog goes and will be in the cab of the truck. Next truck get one the dog will like...that is what I do.lol
I have shown and riased English Mastiff's (200+ pound dogs) and my son has one he takes with him. He got a crew cab truck, took out the back seat, had his Dad (we are divorced) weld together stainless steel bed for the back seat, put a mattress in and the dog rides there very well.
As for the pit bull haters...it is the owners not the breed that makes them mean. I have seen chihuahua dogs meaner than any junk yard dog and it was all because of the owner letting the dog get away with anything because they are "so small and cute". NOT!!

Does your dog stay outside in the summer, or stay inside? If Jake is acclimated to staying outside then riding either in the back of the truck, or in the trailer may be ok. The ride in the truck bed next to the cab would be just as good as the back seat in a crewcab. With shade and hourly water and rest stops during the hottest part of the day Jake should do fine. We have Maxxair vents on our trailer, and with them open the inside temperature is the same as outside. If I were to go this route I'd put the cage at the foot of the steps, 1/2 way between the pin and wheels. Again frequent stops.
Jakes your dog, so it's up to you how or if you do it. I would most likely for a long trip go with the cage in the trailer. Much easier to get the dog in and out while traveling. Short trips I'd do the truck bed.

But when a Chihuahua clamps down on a two year old's head, iit doesn't crush it.

It's not about being a Pit Bull hater, but the facts are that a lot of insurance companies won't insure CGs for certain dog breeds that they have determined business wise to be not insurable or if they do probably at a very substantial increase in premiums so in general it's a business decision governed by the insurance breed haters. Sort of like Flood and Earthquake insurance which might be available, but at an increased premium and might have significant limitations. Finally, it's the decision of the CG on what breeds they allow and the facts that any CG can set it's rules is something one just has to accept and live with.
HERE is an opposing view to your belief that a dogs potential aggression is soley in the owner and not inherent in the breed. Obviously there are differing opinions on breed or owner, but to call one or the other wrong is IMO judgemental and saying another's opinion is wrong which again IMHO is wrong to begin with.
Finally, CG owners can't control what and how any pet owner keeps their pet under their control so that is an unknown that many CG owners and insurance companies don't consider worth the potential financial libality. I have to believe that since an ever increasing number of insurance companies routinely insure some breeds, but not others have based that on facts and not just being prejudiced against one breed over another.
Thus IMHO your objections are being directed at the wrong audience here.

Do you know anybody who has hunting dogs? Maybe you could borrow a dog box if there's enough room in front of the hitch.
Go to a police supply store and get one of those things that attaches to the A/C vent and gets shoved in between your body armor and shirt. All you'd have to do is lengthen the hose some and stick it into the box to keep him cooler. Reflective tarps secured around the box so it doesn't get that metal oven effect would probably be a good idea too.

Check with the laws covering riders in the trailer while traveling. If your state laws or the states you are traveling in prohibit people from riding in the trailer due to a variety of safety concerns, why would you subject your pet to those same concerns. My feelings are the crate in the truck bed or maybe and only maybe, the crate in the trailer. So many unknowns leaving him in the trailer out of site. Temperature, sudden stops, exhaust fumes seeping in, the list goes on.
