I have just purchased a 28" Airstream with a gross weight of 7200lbs. The tongue weight is 976lbs. I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with factory towing package. The limits on the Jeep are 6300lbs gross weight and 630lbs tongue weight. Empty from the factory, Airstream says the unit weighs 5916lbs (all tanks empty). I need to haul the trailer from Delaware to Tampa, preferably with the Jeep. Can the tongue weight be increased on the Jeep to accomplish this very slow tow ? The trailer also has a Reese equalizing hitch, which should help. Excuse me for any "lingo" errors as this is my first post and I am very new to trailer towing. Thanks for any information.

I am not a member of the "weight police", BUT I've had 30 years plus experience towing a variety of trailers....and I would strongly discourage it with extreme prejudice. The Highway Patrol/State Troopers may also get involved at some point.
My posts shouldn't be taken for factual data. They are purely fictional, for entertainment purposes and should not be constituted as actually related to scientific, technical, engineering, legal, spiritual or practical advice. Amen.

Your first post...I hope everyone will go easy on you. Welcome.
Now, don't do it. Delaware to Tampa is a long way..not just around the block..and this combination is not good at all.

Welcome!
Lots of good info here.
Bad combo. Trailer too big.....tow vehicle too small
Said another way.....NO
You need a bigger tow vehicle.

I towed a 25 foot, 7 1/2 ft wide ultralight Rockwood weighing 4000 pounds fully loaded for 2 years with a 04 grand Cherokee. It was to much for the jeep. With that weight you will be lucky to stay in drive, and if you do make it to speed that airstream will walk your short wheel base jeep all over the road.
You can't increase the tounge weight limit on the jeep since the jeep doesnt have a real frame, I think they call it a uni-frame kind of like a frame structure built into the body, but defiantly not a truck frame.

Don't do it. That's too much trailer for the Grand Cherokee. We towed our Salem Cruiselite 28BHXL with our Commander 4.7L with very wind it did fine. Any amount of wind it was white knuckle and max 50 mph. As others have stated its the tail wagging the dog.

Airstreams, tow better than most BUT I think you are asking for trouble. Rent a TV and have someone drive your jeep, turn in the rental in florida and you only pay one way. JMHO
