What campgrounds do you recommend on Lake Hartwell. I have looked at Twin Lakes seem to have very nice sites on the shore, of this campground what sites do you prefer as far as private and easy access to shore?
I have also looked at Lake Hartwell and be interested in sites there as far as private and easy access to the shore?
One other ? is fishing and/or swimming allowed from the campsites?
I've done so much with so little for so long, I'm now qualified to do anything with nothing.

South Carolina State Park called Lake Hartwell has wonderful sites right on the water. Like most SP they do not have full hookups but large, roomy sites with great views right on the water. Worth a look.

The Savannah River runs from NC, bordering SC and GA, and flows to the Atlantic ocean. Between the mid forties through the mid eighties, the COE built three big dams on the river for hydroelectricity, flood control, and navigation. IIRC, three big lakes; Hartwell, Mitchell, and Strom Thurmond were created and there are lots of COE and State Parks, as well as County/City parks, to choose from.
US Campgrounds is a very good website I've used to locate those parks. The GA/SC State parks are reasonably priced, as are the County/City parks. Of course, the "geezer" pass at the COE's trumps them all.

In addition to Twin Lakes, take a look at Oconee Point and Sprinfield. Both of these are COE parks on Hartwell. IMO Twin Lakes is the best though. We like sites 48-53 at TL but they are are hard to get, cause everyone else seems to like them too.

We stayed at Oconee Point and loved it. Can't remember the site but it was huge and right on the water.

Here is a listing of the COE parks on the lake. You can click on the site map and it will let you look at pictures of each individual site. Our favorite is Oconee Point. We also like Springfield, but all are good.

We are looking at May. We live in NC and 2 hours away down I-85. We want to come down Saturday and scope out 2 or 3 of the campgrounds. I counted about 7 campgrounds in reserveamerica. We would not be able to scope out all 7 this weekend. I believe we would rather stay close to I-85 for our options. (for now anyway)
I posted to get a good starting point on the most favored for us to look when we come down Saturday.
We planed on going to Twin Lakes and SC State Park this weekend and with the suggestion of Oconee Point and Springfield may try get Occonee Point in and if time permitting scope out Springfield.
Our plan was to look at a few Saturday and then make reservation while we are down there Saturday, just not enough time for all of the campgrounds.
I figure when we do come down for camping we will check out the rest of them.
For some reason when we go camping we like to go look at the other campgrounds in the area and see what they offer and if we would like to try them out. I have found out a campground can look like the best campground in the world and when you actual go in person they turn out to be a dump or a trailer park.

Checkout Paynes Creek Campground. It is a COE Campground with very nice shaded sites, most right on the lake.
Website is:
http://www.recreation.gov/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=71344
I have my own list of the sites and what I thought of them. I can send you the list if you want. We live close to the CG and sometimes camp there, makes for a very short driving day!
